Interesting bike trailer with indicators on the path at Links Gardens in Leith last night.

Good to say hello to Stickman this morning.

It's a Monkey Light but the challenge is to get to & then keep the speed above the 10mph needed to make the patterns work.

I also spotted Biketrain this morning, which was fortunate as I had some Revolution tickets to give to him.

  3. Young lady on a Pinarello on the Broomhouse Path last night with a staggeringly impressive turn of speed. She went like the proverbial off a shovel.

If it was someone on here - I'm seriously impressed (though maybe a little concerned at you doing that speed on shared-use paths where schoolkids can be very unpredictable).

Still jealous that I can't manage that kind of acceleration and speed ;-)

@HankChief. Good to see you on the school run. Cool to be able to high five you and both your stokers.
    Thanks for the tickets.

Someone's front light which had presumably fallen from their bike on the canal towpath between Meggetland and Harrison Park, bounced into the canal and then drifted across to the far side while continuing to function so that it was illuminating a bush at the end of a garden last night. When I had a front light fall from my bike into the canal it immediately disappeared without trace because it wasn't switched on at the time unfortunately.

Pedersen rider on Morrison Street heading for Lothian Road. I thought it would be quite a sluggish bike, but this chap was fairly shifting.

and then drifted across to the far side

Much more likely to have fallen off a rowing boat if it is on the other side like that.

    Rowing boats with lights?

    What next?

You need them, otherwise you can't see each other in the dark!

"otherwise you can't see each other in the dark"

    That's my point...

Don't go along the canal often at dusk, but presume 'lights on boats' is relatively recent(?)

Or is it that rowing after dark is relatively recent?

No, both been going on for many years. Maybe they are not bright enough or you would have noticed them before now? ;-)

Rowing in the dark with no lights would be incredibly dangerous. It is pitch black out there and some of the houses have those evil "security" lights which dazzle you. You only get a brief glance over you shoulder to try and work out if anyone is blasting towards you.

    Serious question though -

    Can't you hear other rowers?

Big John carries white poly bag in dark which illuminates him. I spotted the rowers with lights at dusk a couple of years back and was much taken with them.

Neither boat I passed en route to py this morning had lights

I expect I could guess which colour their blades were painted.. :-o

    Can't you hear other rowers?

Only if they have spotted you and yell at the top of their voice. And even then it needs full anchors to stop in time to avoid a collision. Also, forgot to mention but rowing boats are subject to navigation rules so even apart from the dark they would need them anyway.

Are you being heightist? I used to row. And at a pretty high level thank you very much. Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.

First boat was maybe four university girls plus cox, second boat was of more interest as seemed to be made of unpainted wood. Two women having a great chinwag I think about a recent or upcoming wedding one of them was the bride in.

Must have been a fast boat if it kept up with you long enough to catch the conversation (or were you one of the annoying coaches on bicycles looking at what's happening on the canal more than on the towpath??)

No i have still got quite good hearing, they were talking loudly, if not shouting to hear each other, and I had to slow for an annoying coach on a bike. It was the plain wood of the boat that I was taken with. So maybe slowed a bit more then there was the bridge to slow for and also I don't go very fast anyway.

Think I spotted jdanielp; assuming he is the only cyclist with flashing pedal lights as he overtook myself and my 2 boys just before the Aqueduct(known on my bike as the "Bumpy Bridge") yesterday evening.

A guy riding along Princes St on a unicycle. Hi-vis'ed up with a full complement of lights. Had to do a double take for sure!

Or rather nearly didn't spot - skinny, long-bearded ninja in full length black lycra and black messenger bag riding a red Genesis Flyer single speed with no lights between Balgreen and Roseburn. Two tiny reflective patches on the courier bag were the only concession to visibility. I plodded along with the benefit of gears behind him on the very upright teporarybike.

@chrisfl yes, that would have been me! I was somewhat surprised by your turn of speed given the load as you kept up with me after I'd overtaken until the aqueduct itself. I'm also surprised to hear that there were two boys given that I had only spotted one! Number two up at the front?
