    'Except cyclists' signs missing.

Small but very real problem - I remember, when I first started cycling in Edinburgh, stopping at that point and being confused as to whether I could go down that way. The obvious cycle lane and signage at the other end doesn't always stop drivers from having a go at you either if you do cycle down that way.

I've finally remembered to report it to the council now, though.

I thought they were only an Edinburgh phenomenon.

One of LaidBack's lovely red Paper Bikes at Cameron Toll. Hopefully they'll spot the bike racks next visit - it was chained to the bench the failing smokers use.

There are approximately 500 000 'lower order' BMs still remaining. This number is reducing due to property development, road widening and so on. The BM heights shown have not been maintained for 30 years and should not be relied upon to accurately define ODN.

Hankchief and the chieflets crossing Maybury Road in front of the bus. My Son was very excited by the bike and says he wants a shot.

Yesterday we were at the park when a bakfiets cycled past.

    "a backfiets cycled past"

One for the sentient beings thread?

I see it every now and again and it's pilot and passengers look so much at ease that it might as well be sentient. However having seen it up close at PoP I don't think it has any form of assist.

Interesting that the council give just 14 days (over a holiday!). The University feels obliged to give much more notice.

Roibeard, I walked through George Square yesterday and there were at least half a dozen abandoned (tyres flat, rusty chains) bikes chained to racks.

It must be a tad frustrating for those who need a space in term time and don't have one of the secure spaces.

My angle grinder would be out within a month

Yes it's very frustrating, especially with the Potterrow shelter out of commission (the replacement in the car park isn't anywhere nearly as well used). But apparently the transport office don't actually have an angle grinder — they need to ask estates for one, for a fee. (I found this out when my key broke off rendering the D-lock unusable. Don't remember the figure but a locksmith was cheaper.)

I've used an angle grinder on D-locks in public a few times.

    Only challenged once.

Young person (not local) "is that your bike"

    Me "no"

Him "well I'll take your photo then"

    Me "fine"

The notices they stick up at KB say they're giving two weeks notice. Although the bikes are still there a year later when they go round with another set of notices...

Venus - pretty bright, near the moon

    Also Neptune (with binoculars)

Thanks @chdot. Beautiful alignment of Mars, moon, Venus from my kitchen window. I stared for some time through my mini binoculars where Neptune should be but despite some ghostly imagined sightings, they always vaporised, so I can't claim a Neptune spot.

Pretty sure I'm seeing four objects.

Just about 'lined up' - last one faint.

Link about says 4th/faint one is Mars so I'm confused.

I wished Lilac Helmet Lady a happy new year as we passed one another this morning. Whilst what I heard in reply sounded like "meh", I'm going to assume it was "yeah".
