    Had a good workout following one of these to the Meadows;

Young lady at the helm, commuting from Libertonish to the Gyle. Great choice I'd have thought - looked discrete and practical.

Chap on a very shiny and highly polished silver Moulton on Semple Street. Must be a high chance of being someone here?

My breath condensing in the air this morning, despite not leaving the flat until around half eight. I might have to rethink my choice of shorts and a t-shirt before too long.

Rider on pink Shand Stoater. We had a conversation about it and how easy it is to chip the paint, while waiting for the toucan crossing over the Western Approach Road. If you're out there, hello.

Aha. I know where gembo lives... ;-)
Thank you for the shout as I don't think I would have spotted you otherwise.

A young lady's automobile broken down at the east end of Melville Drive. Three gallant cyclistadors dismounted and pushed it round the corner.

Also @Morningsider's hippy doppelgänger in Queensferry road. Not he, but his drooping disheveled double.

Mutual spot of SRD at the King's Junction, albeit we were going in opposite directions. I was there with wicker basket Elephant Bike man, who I followed until the MMW junction. Is that satisfying whirr normal for EBs or does he need his drivetrain oiled? Also an Urban Arrow heading westwards on NMW.

@piosad the whirring could be the noise of the palls in the Sturmey Archer hub being overrun in top gear. It's a feature of the way the hub works. I find it very pleasing: it's a lovely healthy mechanical ticking sound. The chain tensioner on my EB makes a noise too, but that's less desirable or attractive.

Yesterday I spotted a very big hole in the ground at the liberton road junction, behind sava centre.

    Student flats maybe?

Mine makes that gentle whirring noise too. The bike would be almost silent if the tensioner wheel aligned with the chain properly.

19 minutes of very detailed explanation about how a SA 3-speed works:

The hub is a miracle of compact engineering. The explanation is very relaxed indeed. You'll find an explanation of the ticking noise about 12 minutes(!) in.

I realise that I should have said 'pawl' earlier. A 'pall' is something different...

That piece of engineering (AW 3 speed) is maybe more than 80 years old and going strong

I failed to recognise @gembo on the tow path this morning. In my defence, it was early in the morning and he was (like me) wrapped from head to toe in waterproof plastic. We paused to comment on the weather.

@SRD on the Meadows, helmet flashing as they engaged a joggist on the wrong side of the shared use path.

the joggist was on the bike side - heading towards me with head phones in and oblivious to iwrats approaching behind her, so my 'engagement' was shouting 'there's a bike behind you'...

  26. Chap on a racer this morning on the Broomhouse path.

He had the best bike bell I've ever heard. Caught up with him at the lights at Saughton Rd North and told him so. Glad I did as he then revealed he also had a clown-car noise bulb horn.

I was very jealous but strangely uplifted that I'd heard both!
