    New York Times on sale at ScotMid Coop, Marchmont

    Yes... that is the New York Times for sale at Scotmid in Marchmont. Yesterday's International Edition.

    @Dave kindly waved me through on the towpath this evening when he had priority approaching a jogger who was coming towards me on my side of the path. A little later I came across @gembo, presumably still training for sunny climes/climbs.

    I noticed that there were fewer dredged bikes beside the canal bridges this morning than there were last night. I suspect some may have gone back into the water (well, they really were too tempting a target to leave unattended overnight).

    Or perhaps that was Edinburgh's dockless bike hire scheme in action?

    @aidback - fascinating. when my m-i-l was in hospital, i asked lots of people where i could find the NYT for her, and the only place anyone mentioned was the International Newsagents on the Royal Mile.

    @greenroofer yes, off to Mallorca Sunday morning very early. Some stupid climbs but some sensible bail outs which I shall take.

    Spotted some small squares of tar on a few pavements around Gilmerton - seems that signs warning of upcoming speed bumps have been removed, presumably to reduce pavement clutter.

    My eldest is starting to enjoy cycling by herself - including on the roads. We were given a generous wide-berth by morningsider the other day who was too quick for me to hail - later we were passed and greeted cheerfully by a man on a nice looking blue single-speed - the cheery greeting to both of us was appreciated - it's nice to show how sociable getting about on a bike can be.

  11. Really lovely to meet and blether with @laidback yesterday.

    What a fantastic wee shop jam packed with interesting, beautiful velos!

    I think he has made Mrs ECT fall in love with cycling.

    Team @algo heading onto the right turn from the east end of the Meadows for the first time, carrying a secret rocket design.

    Male cyclist with kids that I always meet at Leith POP feeder but I can never remember the name - with one child in bike seat and the other cycling independently - at the top of Seafield Road East bridge between Leith and Porty - see you at the feeder again this year I hope!

    Nice to bump into you @IWRATS - can't believe you were given clearance to see the rocket designs. I think my attempts at crossing from Buccleuch st to Summerhall might have been a bit ill-advised. My nerves were shot shortly after. I think I underestimated the tolerance I have developed and seeing vehicles passing that close and fast to my eldest was utterly terrifying.

    @algo

    My mum still worries about me riding round Edinburgh. What can you do apart from feel sad for the kids who don't get to cycle?

    @ECT - thanks - just to re-assure people that Mrs ECT didn't 'fall in love' with a recliner but was trying out an e-bike. :-)

    @algo + @iwrats - My daughter used to bring friends round and we would lend them a bike as they just wouldn't get a chance due to parents being too busy and 'fear of cycling'.

    Had quite a few spots as I pootled along the canal, clearly earlier than I usually make it based on the number of people I saw. Alas I was on my phone while equally trying to get home to bathe baby so no hellos said to POP's resident artist. Also crossed bows with JDP I believe at that weird oval bit out towards the bypass.

    Oh I was also stopped by Sustrans in house fundraising team by the aqueduct. Very nice person asking me if I'd consider helping fund sustrans. I said I'd be delighted to by helping push the Scottish government to move the transport budget to 10% for active travel via POP.

    @ARobComp that was me! I have spotted you on the towpath while cycling home a number of times in the last while, but I'm afraid that I usually get distracted from getting around to posting about it. In the morning I find that posting here is far easier to accomplish while avoiding starting work...

    Two guys carrying a bike into the Bike Station. Turned out one had just crashed into a pedestrian who 'threw themselves into the road' and the other was a good Samaritan who picked him up and took him to the nearest bike shop.

    I passed @kaputnik heading away from work at home time. I was heading towards my work at that point, and he helpfully pointed out that I was going the wrong way.

    Later, having left work after 1800, I waved at @mediumdave. We were both on the way home. I was just about to attempt Craighouse Hill.

    Two of Scotland’s finest, complete with two-wheeled steeds, at the Harrison Road bridge on the towpath telling off a cyclist for what sounded like them steaming through under the bridge without ringing. Which, fair enough, I am fed up of too.

    It's annoying, for sure (shout out to the 2 MAMILs who came steaming under one of the WH bridges 2 abreast, having neither tinged nor responded to my ting), but I'm not sure that's a great use of scant resources.

    Spotted a black Urban Arrow in Torry this morning. Bit off my usual stamping ground admittedly but busy doing Work Stuff.

    @Trixie, I confess that the number of close calls in these situations involving my older child on her bike or the younger child on the tagalong has exceeded a threshold where my attitude to people doing this is basically that of a Nick Cook to a pothole.

    @fimm, the very same
