I spotted six (that's 6) cars jumping through the red lights on Queen Street at the junction with Hanover St/Dundas Street as I stood waiting to cross earlier this afternoon.
But I didn't spot them speeding off into the distance, having performed their illegal manoeuvre.
That's because, instead of spotting them speeding off into the distance, having performed their illegal manoeuvre, I spotted them joining the already very long queue of traffic on the other side of the junction.
The easiest of these cars to spot was the one which, because the queue of traffic was so long, had to stop on the pedestrian crossing. Which is so-called because it is for pedestrians. Not cars.
None of the aforementioned red light jumping cars were bicycles, by the way.
In fact I didn't spot any red light jumping bicycles on Queen Street at the junction with Hanover St/Dundas Street as I stood waiting to cross earlier this afternoon.
I only spotted red light jumping cars.

A Steveo and an Arrelcat. Double word score.

Reciprocal spot for kaputnik, whose bright yellow messenger bag first caught my attention, followed by those signature silver reflective glasses. I was hot-tyreing it over to EDP to catch a train.

On my Helios, with small female stoker en route to birthday party, and passed another Helios, with small female stoker, and older child self-propelling alongside.

Man and woman in blue/green Edinburgh Uni Triathlon Club lycra heading east on London road across the end of Abbey Lane. For some reason only the man saw that the light was red.
Child unable to register bell-tings blocking the WoL path just past before the Victoria turn-off, whose presumed parent was ignoring his other child whilst he blocked half the path a little further on whilst he argued with an greybeard cyclist in blue lycra, who rode off with an "No you weren't, you were on the phone!" to which the presumed parent responded that he was a copulating male fowl, to which I added as I passed through the new-formed gap that he shouldn't swear in front of children, as there were three on cycles approaching from the other direction as well as those I had assumed to be his.

Antisocial speedster heading along from Roseburn to the Crewe Toll turnoff, not slowing for anyone despite three times meeting someone walking in the opposite direction with a cyclist about to overtake them. If he had a bell he was choosing not to use it, so I had to ding-by-proxy for him twice. He could have slowed down as he proved he had brakes when he lightly tapped them when he was almost taken out by a ned emerging from Drylaw.Posted 13 years ago # -
A 70s Raleigh Campus ladies commuterbike in electric blue, loveliest feature was the chainring, the 3 arms of which were in the shape of a Raleigh heron.

Thursday past, the blue folding bike with Cyrillic lettering. Locked to railings outside the old GPO building on Waterloo Place, corner with North Bridge. I was heading on my wee folder onto North Bridge, so only caught a glimpse. The last time I saw this bike was in exactly the same place, almost exactly a year ago if I recall. That time I was on the pavement and took photos, which of course I can't find...
Maybe the owner works for Microsoft? I believe they rent offices there. The Cyrillic narrows the country of origin to Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria or Serbia. There was apparently a Bulgarian folding bike made during the Socialist era which looked a bit like a Raleigh Twenty...

If I had the photo I could tell you the brand (I can read Cyrillic). In the absence of that just now, guesswork.
Maybe the Cyrillic bike is a "Balkan" model, produced by Balkancar in Bulgaria.
They seem to be copies of Raleigh designsby the looks of this old catalogue: note the "Chopper" model with larger rear wheel and motorbike style saddle!Their folders included the SG-7 and the VM, both in a blue finish. Presumably the models for the home market would have had Cyrillic letters, and the export models latin letters. Here's an old one someone is renovating. It looks like the one I remember seeing on Waterloo Place, but can't be sure about the integrated rear rack.
Here the same enthusiast renovates a "Chopper" frame, and another Balkan folder which looks very similar to a Raleigh Twenty. Great scans of the original instruction manual!

Spotted. The 'Conference Bike' on the Isel of Great Cumbrae on Saturday. This has space for 6 or 8 people all facing each other, peddling but with (I presume) one person steering. I'll google for a picture.

@crowriver that does look very similar to the one that I've seen, heading down Clerk St. in direction of bridges.

"eek! didn't spot you back cb sorry, what were you riding/wearing?? "
I was wearing a blue Volkswagen Golf.

Re: the Cyrillic folding bike, it seems it's rather less exotic or interesting than hoped.
I found the photos I took last year (alas Flickr is playing up today so can't upload them to show you), and yes, it's an IKEA Raleigh folding bike: even has 'Raleigh' on the rear stays. Basically a lower spec steel framed folder (like the Raleigh Stash). As to the Cyrillic letters, as far as I can make out it literally reads "Yadkietd 3" which having asked a Slavic speaker is meaningless in Bulgarian or Russian. It may mean something in Ukrainian or Serbian, it's not clear. Speculating wildly it may be the name of a ship - folding bikes are quite popular items on large bulk cargo carriers and the like.
Anyway, for those who may be interested, it seems the "Balkan" folder I mentioned earlier is mostly a copy of an old Bianchi folding bike - note the parallelogram rear stays/luggage carrier. Some early models seem to have copied the Raleigh Twenty/Moulton approach to the down tube. Finally, some light relief - a rather bizarre bit of gratuitous female nudity in the shape of the model astride this 1970s Bianchi folder. What the intention of this postcard was, is now lost in the mists of time...

Okay, the Cyrillic script on that bike seems to be Ukrainian, not Russian, Bulgarian or Serbian.
ЯДКІЄТД 3.
As to what it means, no idea!
Posted 13 years ago # -
Romanised as YADKIYETD
which of course is of no help as I don't speak or read Ukrainian either!
Posted 13 years ago # -
Here are the images, finally. Took these in June last year, outside the habitual parking spot at the corner of North Bridge and Waterloo Place. If anyone knows a Ukrainian, it would be interesting to know if this means anything at all...

Oh it does even say "Raleigh" (in English!) on the seat stay... kind of helps place its origin. Possibly the Cyrillic is an after-market addition?
Posted 13 years ago # -
Yes, it's one of these:
One of 9000 given to UK employees of IKEA in 2006 as a Christmas pressie. Can be had on eBay quite cheaply, usually minus the IKEA logo, as here. Apparently these were made in Poland for IKEA, so it's not outwith the bounds of possibility that a few dropped off the back of a lorry and found their way to Ukraine to be rebadged and sold... Otherwise, the owner of our Cyrillic bike may just be a former IKEA worker, or eBay trawler, with a penchant for Ukrainian script?

Anth (again)coming along Semple Street with no hands on the bars, tut tut ;).
Posted 13 years ago # -
Something like that, not quite as cool though. Think he was fishing for his pass.
Posted 13 years ago # -
Ah yes, that would have been right (I'm lazy enough to not want to stop...)

Bottle green Moulton (possibly an AM, what looked like 2 chainrings/derailleur, drop bars), stopped at traffic lights on George Street turning left into St Andrews Square, noon today. Anyone on here?
