If it is treated legally as a 'road', then in the same way as you wouldn't expect cars to bump onto the pavement to carry on their journey when there is road works, then you wouldn't expect cyclists to cross onto the pavement either.

However cyclists have a pretty big advantage over motorists as we can simply dismount, walk on the pavement, then carry on our journey as normal once past the 'road' works.

We usually have no sympathy for drivers when they are complaining that they have to divert to wherever because of whatever roadworks, i'm feeling about as much sympathy in this case. Just get off and walk round it. :)

“@chdot it was briefly pedestrians on a short section of the cycle side; now it is cyclists on a quite lengthy section of the pedestrian side (who knows for how long).”

    Ah, ok.

@gembo, scoosh is easy to spot up close but hard to see in a crowd. He rides a recumbent.

I was a single occupant driver today as I was taking my car for a service. I'd been stationary for a few minutes in the huge queue of St John's Road traffic heading towards Drumbrae when I spotted HankChief cruising past me along the bus lane.

It took me nearly twenty minutes to drive from St John's Road to Maybury. Why on earth do people get in a car and do that every day?

gembo tipped me off about a potential sighting of Big John on the canal towpath but unfortunately I did not see him, although I did spot him on the far side of the road by the canal at Wester Hailes the other week so rang my bell to attract his attention and then gave him a cheery wave.

Yes Big John back visiting. He told me of some sad news within his family and we spent some time sharing our feelings about the transience of life. He then returned to familiar topics - his hatred of the council, his dislike of 20mph (I immediately deflected him with the saving of children's lives, he is pro children). The Leith Walk Trams (again he is not a fan) and indeed PoP (not a fan).

He is very quick on the uptake and remembers much detail. We parted on good terms and his hearty thump on my back propelled me quite a distance along the towpath

Crossing from Leamington Bridge to Leamington Road. Woman at edge of pavement with two fox terrier pups unleashed. On a cycle, that would have caused me instant fear that these canine hazards would run under my wheels, and the woman would have got a dirty look. As I was on foot, I smiled benignly at the cute pups and their owner.

Lady on a blue mountain bike with yellow Ortleib panniers heading north on Lothian Road & down to the Dean Bridge last night. We had a conversation across a couple of sets of red lights about the horror of Lothian Road in the rush hour (she usually goes in via Roseburn Path to avoid it, but was justifiably cnfused as to why she should be the one re-routed and not the cars).

Hello if you lurk here - I was the post-dentist mumbler.

Spotted on page 3 of the Spring 2018 edition of Liberton and Gilmerton Green News an article about an anti-chicane activist operating under the nom de guerre 'David French'.

I tend to think they should ban chicane on any road above 30 mph a bit of a danger when cycling. West Lothian even has them on 50mph roads the one coming in to livi on the A71 made a nice safe cycle in to a dangerous close pass. The one coming in to Edinburgh on the A71 by the he-riot watt is far to close to a 50 mph its technically 40 just. I am not sure chicane does a lot but causes close passes. I can’t not see there cannot be bia passes on the left for cyclists at all chicane.

Yesterday, coming through the Meadows - a guy sat outside at Victor Hugo - yellow fluorescent jacket and bike helmet and apparently holding a cigarette in what I think of as "the French manner" - forearm vertical, cigarette held horizontal and pointing sideways from the vicinity of his left cheekbone.

    @unhurt

My favourite is smoking in the squaddie/prison manner. Cigarette held almost vertically between thumb, middle finger and index finger with the burning end pointing down towards the palm. Look of great concentration.

@Iwrats I tend to always see cycle couriers in the same place, but it's probably near their depot. After a couple of weeks of shortest-commute when I was in early I've been trying to ablate some flex and get some exercise this week, whereas last week I was spreading chalky tendrils as wide as possible.

That's also the field archaeologist approach: cigarette as sheltered from inclement weather as possible, bonus slight warming effect on that hand.

Saw what looked like a two headed human approaching along Gilmore Place. Turned out to be a bloke on bike with child of about eight standing on the rack.

Spotted a bike parked up in Aviemore that had me baffled today: an Oke Ja. Strangest bike I've ever seen.

    Can someone explain?
