@jdanielp Wow! that's a lot of spotting you have done this morning! I don't think I saw any cyclist on the towpath until I got beyond the bypass.

@bill thanks. I stopped to chat with Big John and had a brief exchange with gembo as he passed me. How early in the morning was your trip? Do you know what happened to the swan families when I was away at the end of August? I've just been seeing one family with two cygnets since.

@jdanielp I am on the towpath between 6.30 (around Harrison Park) till 7.10 (west of Ratho). If for some reason I was confused which direction to go I have handy Orion shining in the west these days.

Don't really know what happened to the swan families. Actually I hoped you would know. Same as you I can now see only one family with two, nearly grown up cygnets. I assume that's the original swan family as I see them between Meggetland and Wester Hailes.

@bill I only have theories. Maybe some of the cygnets flew the nest early or jumped ship to join a different family and headed further west? Others have bleaker theories.

Big John has just bought a DVD after protracted negotiations with Mrs Big John. THey just cleared out a whole load of them, but this one was only a pound. [Whenever I can get those catchy Beatles Tunes - Why don't we do it in the road and Happiness is a warm gun out of my head the Scott Joplin theme tune to the movie pops in]

Big John is going to see 10 cc £38.50 per ticket. Usher Hall. Big John likes the Usher Hall as a venue but the staff don't allow you to stand. Big John put some considerable force into demonstrating this by pushing down on my shoulder.

@gembo is this The Sting? He told me that he had bought it for £3.99 from a 'pound' shop. Sounds like he was conned.

@jdanielp - I assumed after many years of my dad asking me to guess how much an item cost at the pound shop that it cost A pound.

    Trades descriptions act?

Holyrood Distillery opened its shop today (or thereabouts) selling Gin. It sits on the corner, after Jeannie Deans Tryst and across from the Engine Shed where the distillery is situated. Looks nice but I have plenty gin (a seaweedy/pine rsin one from Newton Stewart, The Botanist from Islay, sone Tanquerry in case Princess MArgaret drops by, some Gordons (for Mags's Ma) and some Seedlip (non-alcoholic gin, which tastes nice with gin in it)

They will be producing whisky in years to come.

Gembo's well-turned calves, exposed to view. Long socks all in the wash?

A wall on Gilmerton Road with a hole in it. That this hole is roughly car sized is, I'm sure, entirely coincidental.

There is a swan family which appears to have nested in the model boat pond at Inverleith Park, and another can be seen heading for the mouth of the Water of Leith--they seem to have a nesting area just downstream from the italian ice cream place.

I thought they were the same, but i'm sure inverleith has 5 cygnets and WoL 6?

Inverleith swans hatched five this year but one went missing quite early on. Generally they stick to the pond - rarely absent, so not out confusing swan spotters in others parts of town. They nest in the "marsh" created at the west end of the pond - one of my favourite small-scale eco-interventions.

Was that @Edinburghcyclecam who overtook me at around 6pm on their way home? Fluorescent rucksack and an incredibly bright rear light.

There is an actual 'gated community' in the Pleasance.

    Hamilton's Folly Mews.

Yes off the street - the Pleasance, not at the fringe venue. The gate is often open when I pass. The folly is busy sitting up on Calton Hill being Edinburgh's disgrace
