Transport convener Lesley Macinnes said: “We’re scheduled to carry out footway surface treatment on the A71 during the summer.

“It’s very public spirited of Mr Hawkins to clear the pavement, however cycling on pavements poses a real danger to pedestrians – and, as a result, it’s against the law.

“We would strongly encourage cyclists to use one of the excellent off-road routes, such as the National Cycle Network route 75 or the shared path along the Union Canal.”

When I first returned to cycling, nearly twenty years ago, I used that pavement and it was good (probably cleared by Peter even then). Helped me to get to the canal at Ratho after coming along the long dalmahoy as the A71 is not for the feint or is that faint hearted?

Stretch from Hatton Mains to Toby Carvery turn. There is space on the south side for an off road path if Roseberry can be persuaded?

I go on the road now but it is unpleasant.

Uhm the NCN 75 is an on-road route along that stretch of the A71, isn't it?

No, NCN 75 crosses the A71 west of Kirknewton, but doesn't actually go along it at any point.

@frenchy is correct. NCN 75 goes along long dalmahoy road to the junction where turning right would take you down to A71 but staying on the left takes you over the railway then along to the quarry. After the quarry it is a relatively pleasant cycle on the backroad to Kirknewton. This backroad enters Kirknewton with the strange long row of modern standing stones. the NCN75 then crosses the railway at the level crossing and you can then use the pedestrian crossing at the A71 to get over and onto the east Calder pavement. Past the small holding the NCN then takes a detour along farm roads, sometimes big puddles, these roads come out at St Pauls RC primary. In east Calder. From there NCN goes into the Almondell country park and you can get to midcalder off road. At midcalder the NCN 75 goes through various housing estates ( bought, corporation and maybe housing association) all way to original Livingston village. I can go on, I will go on, eventually after traipsing all the way through livi on up and down paths etc and when you get beyond Murieston in Livingston you end up in some kind of minimalist country park on what are quite good roads that nature has started to reclaim, From there you end up at the Pyramids of Bathgate and you follow the railway to Coatbridge. You then get lost a bit until Uddingston famous for tunnocks tea cakes. From there you wend your way through bleak post industrial Glasgow. I'll stop. No canal though you need to get to Ratho or hermiston to access the canal. From the south this will involve the road or pavement unless you detour through Heriot watt etc.

It's really crap there isn't a direct East-West route from Coatbridge to Glasgow.

Two motorways and three A roads, but clearly no space for a cycleway.

That sounds a lot like the West Lothian Crematorium, and Starlaw Road (which has a gate across the south end, and Armco at the north end but an underpass onto Starlaw Business Park where Endura is).

The one time I did the NCN75 all the way we went from Glasgow back to embra hoping for prevailing wind. Nice out Clyde until Uddingston, sketchy then, I think some of it on pavement along very busy arterial road. Beyond coatbrig quieter airdrie way and the path was the old railway with the sculptures, plus nice fisherman's place at reservoir. Tannochside I recall was the worst bit.

The country park after the pyramids probably the nicest bit.

Football stadia we saw - Parkhead, Clyde, Airdrie and Livingston

I have done the canal from Glasgow to Edinburgh twice. You get chased by wee boys on motorbikes until you leave the wet half to the west. Better after Falkirk but a slog

A man straining up School Brae then whooshing down it a few minutes later. I thought he would then go back up but he pootled along the Almond for a bit and went round the roundabout by the causeway a couple of times.

In London. MANY Bromptons. Also, bizarrely, an electric fatbike chained to a lamppost.

Chap pedalling along Euston Road (London, 3 lanes of aggressive urban traffic in each direction) with a small child in a rear seat and a bamboo plant in a pannier. Chapeau!

Spotted an Urban Arrow turning left from Kilgraston Road to Strathearn Road. Didn't recognise the rider.

Later spotted a bright blue R&M cargo bike, I think it was parked on Dundas Street but might've been Inverleith. I was on my way to the wood place at Granton.

Later still spotted a very grey Van Moof near Tesco at the Rodney St tunnel.

Not me; the closest I was to there would've been Buccleuch St.

My daughter and 2 grandchildren at the Murrayfield Ice Rink. The kids go to Roseburn Primary and I'm surprised I don't bump into them more often. A very pleasant surprise.

Takeaway bike being ridden uphill around London Road roundabout, in the dark (it was Friday evening). Brave chap heading towards the Picardy Place burach, saddle looked a tad low for my liking I must say. Lights appeared to be functioning, but I am not expert enough to tell if they were flashing normally or in "I'm stolen" mode...

I spotted a couple of unlit takeaway bikes ridden by stealthily hooded individuals on Boroughmuir Plaza one evening last week.

Zip Electric Bike display in the foyer at work. Set up as a moped without the petrol. Smallish but clearly designed to carry a passenger who would be small. Judging by distance to footrests. Very heavy. 32 kg. citing only 30-40km range before charging. Though is 250 Watt Big shopping basket.

Positioned almost as a lambretta style scooter that is allowed on cycle path. Not sure what market there is in this niche?
