Man with small kid on child seat and another child of around 8 on their own bike filtering down Lothian Road from Princes Street. Maybe trying to get home after one of this morning’s bike buses?

Fair play to them, but jeez, that road is horrible even for the most battle-hardened adult cyclist.

@LaidBack it was me waving to you around the Meadows yesterday (Friday) evening.

@bill - of course - not actually seen you in cycle mode before! Hence my 'not quite sure' return wave maybe.
Expect you to be always en route out of town - will be nice to be in the city on segregated path from time to time.

Bike I was on was not my own - new MetaBike Daemon edition in for review by @nobrakes on bike.scot blog.
I had first decent run on it to Apple Pie on Thursday - with lycra and spd shoes of course!
(Votes for Apple Pie as Scottish baker of the year appreciated by them - see cafe thread with @gembo)

@LaidBack so many people and bikes in the city. I am not used to that! I had some time between appointments so I took a longer route to keep myself warm.

Voted for the Apple Pie bakery (thanks for the reminder). I am waiting for a free Friday afternoon AND clement weather to go that way from work again.

Anne Laurence (BBC Sports Personality of the Year, 1971) being driven in a very fancy BMW on South Gyle Access. Presumably on her way to Decathlon.

Been up the rugger one suspects?

Her daughter won same award 35 years later. Quite unique tho the mother whom I always thought might be a bit of a total cow. Did not vote for her daughter due to living in the 17th century. The stepdad Tim is felt possibly to have voted for Zara due to having one foot in the real world

Yes, spotted her at Murrayfield too.

Can't figure out why South Gyle Access was on her route to Murrayfield, which I suppose may be the point.

Can you spot with your nose? If so I spotted a vaguely sulphurous odour in the vicinity of Forest Road at 9ish. Did anyone else? Any theories?

A couple of young pipers playing La Marseillaise to some appreciative French after yesterday's game.

Every nation state should adopt La Marseillaise as their national anthem. Most are dirges - that's really upbeat.

    @jonty

The whiff of Brimstone is, I'm told, a cold catalytic converter burning off accumulated sulphur compounds.

    @Rosie

The words of the Marseillaise are frankly terrifying. Impure blood flooding the native soil and stuff if it was in German it would be banned double quick time.

Flower of Scotland is awful and I wrote to the SRU to say that and suggest an alternative but they ignored me sniff.

Agree about Flower of Scotland. A dirge.

Alternative, adopt the upbeat Proclaimers for sporting events.

"And I would kick 500 goals,
And I would kick 500 more,
Just to be the guy who kicked 1000 goals,
    And got an overwhelming score.."

    Dee dee dee dee..

@SRD Same with me a couple of weeks ago taking a 5.1m plank home through the sleet. By the time people realise they're already past.

Met Big Ged, formerly of EBC, at Threipmuir Reservior yesterday. He was pleased to learn about the hide there and scurried off to investigate. Lots to see there, and well done to the kind people who refill the feeders.

    Cheers

When I am in charge, there will be a referendum on Scotland's national anthem. The options will be:

    • Alestorm - Over the Seas
    • Belle & Sebastian - Sleep the Clock Around
    • bis - Control the Radical
    • Martyn Bennett - Chanter
    • Michael Marra - Hermless
    • Mogwai - Mogwai Fear Satan

Do not forget Freedom Come A Ye and the theme tune from the Archers sung as 'Rumpty-tumpty-tumty-tum, rumpty tumpty tum-teeeee!'

Hermless is a great song mind.

It was Billy Connolly's idea. You wouldn't take issue with an actual National Treasure would you?

ISTR that the Big Yin suggested The Archers' theme be the UK's national anthem.

@Frenchy, are you minded to include Dougie MacLean's Caledonia?

Oh well that's all right. We'll leave them to it.

Caledonia written on the beach at Arcachon so good Auld Alliance material? Originally had a line about kissing the girls that needed kissing, now replaced with proved the points etc so yeah why not. Can get tearful though.

If we're after songs that just sum the place up I'd suggest the Skids Into The Valley.

The Farmfoods Ranter was adjusting the traffic lights on Nicolson Street again.

Hopefully he optimised them for traffic flow.

Spotted a lady on the High Street with a trolley full of coffee for the UCU pickets. Wearing a remarkable hi-viz Gothic raincoat.
