Curly-haired person riding a mostly-grey faired recumbent westbound along Oxgangs Road yesterday around 1pm. Anyone on here?

Spotted not-Steveo Steve on big, black, maybe Raleigh? cargo bike this morning, heading up Causewayside. I was in disguise* on the motorbike, on what is now a quite rare occasion.

    * ish

@ejstubbs, jss here has a grey recumbent bike. I don't know if it has a fairing though.

@chdot - is that a front wheel drive bike!

    Yes.

    Electric too.

5 gears, don’t know how it all works or if both front wheels are driven.

It's the Black Iron Horse, and yes, both front wheels are driven. There's a hub gear and an inboard disc brake hiding under the cargo area.

Rear wheel steering is a tricky one to crack because the turning radius is continually decreased, and the lateral force tends to bring the centre of gravity further inwards, not outwards, which is why rear wheel steered bicycles are basically not a thing*. The most successful RWS I've seen beyond Thrust SSC is on the Velayo velomobile trike, but I think it used a virtual pivot to achieve better control of the steering dynamics.

    * I did design a RWS recumbent once, and it would have been even more unridable than recumbents† generally are.
† The Swing Bike, aka Wobblebike, while not a recumbent, is quite mad but I found it actually reasonably ridable after a few minutes' acclimatisation.

@edinburgh87 near Gladhouse (part of greater Edinburgh now). Enjoyed a nice chat thereafter on our pre-work pseudo commutes.

@arellcat - thanks for filling in the tech on Black Iron Horse. Is a newcomer in market and think it does well in Kobenhavn. We are a dealer contact although we can't get that model through our door!
In Denmark cargo trikes are main thing and I think Black Iron Horse moved in to offer another locally made design as a change from Christiania and Nihola. Steel frame and box uses recycled plastic. Integrated lights. Choice of colours etc Shimano Steps with 5 speed Di2 hub and diff.
Carlsberg Brewery own one or two.

Curly haired recumbent rider spotted in Oxgangs was not me!
Although a rather curly gent with a silver grey recumbent and hair now matching bike colour
But no fairing and am rarely to be seen in that area

Strava informs me that the cyclist I followed down Gilmerton Road and up Minto Street yesterday was @edinburgh87. Apologies for not recognising!

Possible @dave cycling over the bypass late this afternoon? Was underneath in car, bit of a long shot, but it was a long tailed cargo bike with two similarly sized small passengers.

Very possible at maybe quarter to five at the northern Baberton bridge?

@dave - Yeah, that would be it. I was in, and contributing to, the sewer of fumes and traffic noise below as you sailed serenely overhead.

Had the pleasure of meeting MalkyB, who along with a man in black, assisted miniSRD in snaffling a deal at the bike station...

Out to Dunbar via Traprain. Tranent is best route to get away from coast road and up to Gifford for cafe. Covered part of Rivers and Ropeswings route as featured in Spokes Favourite Rides booklet.

@Laidback - came back from Morham via Lantern Rouge with kids yesterday. Would have been an epic 'spot' if we'd passed, though we did take every opportunity to get off the road, away from the traffic and on to some East Lothian dirt.

I was pretty certain the recumbent tandem was yourself but wasn't 100%. We'd just done our club run out to Gifford via Humbie and the Yak and were on the return leg. No room at the inn at Lantern Rouge so we tried the cafe across the road. A bit posher but the cakes, coffee and pies were all excellent so would highly recommend them!

@Laidback piloting a cargo bike of some kind on Gilmore Place. We drew alongside on a Tern HSD with mini-Greenroofer (now 17!) on the back and I remarked to Laidback how we (by which I meant the three of us) were riding the future.

I'd been to collect mini-G from a flute lesson on Drumsheugh Gardens as she thought it would be quicker for me to collect her rather than her have to wait for a bus...

En-route I'd experienced the 'facility' on the WAR with all the stupid trees in planters spread over it to make it useless as a bike path. Model...Cycling...City.

“to make it useless as a bike path“

    Nah it’s fine

As long as NO ONE ELSE is walking/cycling there at the same time.

Maybe it’s a subtle hint that there is a plan to put a segregated cycle lane ON the WAR…

Spokes have raised this with CEC (including head planner).

If it is a subtle hint, they were being...incredibly subtle...about it, even in private.
