    Hello All,
As alluded to in the "new bikes" thread I have just become the owner of a shiny new (to me) toy :-)
It's a Giant OCR, and being me I want to put mudguards on it... so given it appears to have small mounting points on the rear axle mounting plates (dunno/can't remember the proper name!) what are my best options for full mudgaurds on a roadie type bike?

Also, is it possible to get a rear rack for this sort of bike? and if yes, any reccomendations? (no mounting points on the rear stays so I assume I would have to attach the front of a rack to the seatpost area?)

    Thanks :-)

I found these crud racer things to do the job pretty well. Although I am not sure how easy it is to replace parts as I have broken a connecter thingy on the rear one-they are designed to break rather that kill you if something gets caught in them.

I am pretty sure you can get seat post mounted pannier racks although I have never tried one so don't know about them.

Do you mean something like a Carradice Bagman:

Or you can get normal racks which attach the front end where the brake bolt would go if you had calliper brakes. You'd have a bolt there to support the middle of the mudguard anyway.

Ohh, the word you're looking for is probably dropout:

Yup, dropout, that's the word! :-)
I'm thinking more the SKS full length guards if they'll fit, But keen to hear others opinions before I buy.
That sort of seat post mount rack may well do, though I'm guessing they'll be pretty limited weight-wise. I was wondering if there were racks available which would attach at the rear spindle?

Thanks for the info so far though guys :-)

You can get racks which attach to the brake bolt but I couldn't find one on a bike shop web page. I fitted one to a friend's bike a few days before Di died so that's 13 years ago. It was an early '80s Dawes Handmade with no braze ons for a rack.

I have Giant half mud guards on my new toy (went to Dunsyre on it today, very quickly, thought it was the new bike til I turned around, quite stiff NE wind making return a little tuff on the uphill stretches.

the half muds are similar to SKS but clearly only go halfway round and might be an option? I have no idea how they cope with spray, but must be better than no-guard which can be quite an irritation if you are following someone and surface water abounds.

I don't know if this affects a Giant OCR but I remember in Tim Moore's book French Revolutions he fitted a rear rack and panniers to a GT ZR3000 for a trip round France. The chain stays were too short so his heels hit the panniers on every pedal stroke. He may have been exaggerating for comic effect though. Funny book if you've not read it.

I better not read it for a laugh then.

Yes, it doesn't make much sense does it? Could I suggest it's an idiom? "You are an idiom" (Inspector Clouseau)

I regularly annoy weans in school when they ask questions like "Is that not the same as we did last week?" To which I will say "Yes. It is not the same as we did last week."

@folds - that would be annoying to your average juvenile.

My absolutely hilarious rules for taking kids swimming are 1. No enjoying yourselves and 2. No getting wet. I love to say this immediately prior to entering the building containing the swimming pool. It is very, very funny (to me only).

looks like I'm going to go for the SKS (P35) full mudguards, and I've found this little gizmo* to allow fitting the front of the rack :-) so my choice of racks just got loads larger B-)

*M-Part seat clamp with rack mounts, £6.99 online from SJS Cycles. Should find out tomorrow if it's any good when it hopefully arrives!
