  1. Last night I completely cracked one of the headaches on the Sunbeam (the headset, ditched my previous bodge) - only one more to sort. Going by TBS tonight to get a stem and have another look at their old-stlyee axles. It WILL be on the road on the 27th, and if it's dry it WILL be parked outside PY that very morn.

I need to find a tweed cap.

  3. That's precisely where I was thinking of (and Fabhatrix is more or less next door if they have nothing/if what they have smells fushty).

    So that's N+1.

    You must already have one...

  5. Actually, no. Two cycling caps; a fedora; couple of baseball caps; and an Indiana Jones style bush hat thingy.

That bike's more deerstalker than bunnet, isn't it?

You should be OK in Armstrongs - it's not nearly as fleamarkety as it used to be.

I'll see if my Dad's got any that are too big for him. He's got a stack of tweed headgear and a small cranium, so there's a fair chance.

Although, digging in my mindbrain, I found this:

Like everyone, I'm going to leave without a word if Anth isn't wearing a nifty outfit like that, complete with fiercly laquered hair, on the 27th.

  12. Argh! Cannae see the vid, will have to check tonight.

Sorely tempted to go all 'Armstrong's' for the outfit for the day. Payday a week tomorrow. Hope to be in the position by then, with a working BB, to order the remaining replacement parts (moustache bars (proper old-skool ones) and black metal 'guards) in order to be up and running a few days before so I can make sure it's not about to fall apart on me.

    *excited bounce*

@Anth I've a pair of proper gentleman's huntin 'n' shootin' "Plus twos" in a sort of tweed / houndstooth fabric that might work? Armstrong's can be pretty pricy if you wan't proper tweedy vintage stuff.

Also, some awesome brown suspenders to help hold em' up (no belt loops in them days) that might help complete the look.

Looks like the blokes off of the 1900's are wearin swimming clothes! I have a bearly used pot of Black & white hair grease you're welcome to borrow.

EDIT. Oh and we'll be expecting a circa 1900s BBC acsent!

Must confess a bit shocked you don't have a flat cap Anth, it's an obligatory Gentlemans item!
(and surprisingly practical on a bike in our weather... :-/ )

Whatever do you wear when you are out shootin' and fishin'?

  20. 1930s...

And I know Smudge, I must rectify that.

Ordered Soma Lauterwasser bars last night, which look identical to the ones that came off and were 'misplaced'. All some new black metal 'guards, and another set of BB cups to try (only need the non-drive side - the shell seems to have a smaller than usual diameter, but we'll see if this works - I think I've already got the correct length axle, and the bearings are fine - strangely the axle is about a mm too thick to fit into the chainring crank, but fits perfectly into the non-drive side crank - got to love the quirky non-standardness of these old bikes... :-/)

Before I forget, can you unlend the spotting scope on that morning? I'm orf up to the Highlands the day after for a week, after which I'll gladly relend it rather than see it return to the mercies of shelf and dust.

It might be easier to go for "modern retrohipster" garb rather than "authentic old-fangled gentleman leisure cyclist".

Will you have a replacement camera by then, in order to record any interest from other road users (and your suitably-authentically-archaically-couched retorts) on your journey?

If this goes ahead, there's http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=5709#post-78771 at 08:12, apparently.

If the Sunbeam is rolling by then are you going to take it to CM in the evening? Even if you're just dandy-horsing it you'd be able to keep up.

  25. Might be fun. All entirely dependant on sorting the bottom bracket issue...

    Posted 11 years ago #
  26. Right, given the Olympic bell-ringing thingy on the 27th, and the fact I've got the bottom bracket to sort still on the Sunbeam (but my god it's looking beautiful with the 'guards on and so forth) I plan to postpone this to the week after - Friday 3rd August.

Hmm. I put this in my calendar ages ago and didn't bother reading the topic, so I'm planning to be at PY at the usual time, if anyone fancies dropping by (leaving for work at 8:30)!

Instead of Anth's bike you can see my surgically-enhanced Automatix instead :)

Sorry Dave, I am already running late as it is! At least you got to sit outside. I remember when we used to do that, in the summer..
