Tektro Lyra Brake problem

    I wonder if anyone could help suggest a possible solution to my Tektro Lyra Brake problem please?

    I have a problem with the rear brake. Its a
    disc with traditional cable pull. When I pull on the brake leaver it pulls the brake lightly but then there is an audible 'click' where the tension on the cable is released and the pads no longer apply preasure to the disc. On releasing the leaver and re applying the brake the same happens. Its almost like there is some sort of ratchet in the brake which is clicking over???

    cable kinked inside housing somewhere?

    Alternatively, these symptoms have happened to me when I've re-cabled a brake and cable isn't pulled tight enough when you clamp it on to the brake arm. Solution has been to pull brake cable through with pliers, then gently apply brake lever, pulling it taught in both directions, then clamp the cable, increasing tension on brake lever to ensure that cable is properly bedded in. The bullet-head of the cable, if not taught enough, can sit proud of the housing inside the brake lever, so it seems taught to the fingers, but when you properly pull on the lever, it jumps into proper place, releasing brake tension, but cable still seems taught. When you let go of brake lever, the brake spring forces the cable back into its original position and problem re-sets itself.

    P.S. yeas they are Tektro so you won't get very far on Shimano website!

    I was always taut that when tightening brakes they had to be taught.

    I agree with K. Check your brake lever's articulated bit where the cable nipple fits in: there's every chance that it's not seated properly when the cable is tensioned. Lengthening the barrel adjusters will only help once you sort the seating.

    I am currently and find that the brake leaver pulls the brake but then an audiable click is heard and the preasure is released almost like there is some ratchet mechanism where its reaching the end of its limit? I might try replacing the pads as the brakes pull an arm in a circular motion and I guess if the brake pads are warn then it could be reaching its limit?

    This is a known problem with Lyras. I haven't opened them up to look but I am told that the pistons/ pads are actuated by a cam. After a little bit of wear the cable pulls the cam 'over the top' so that the cam surface lets the pads pull away from the disc. What you have described happened to me a couple of times and was temprorarily cured by adjusting the brakes. After a bit I decided that I didn't want a set of brakes whose wear characteristics led to a situation where the harder you pulled the brakes the less effect it had. I solved the problem by getting a set of Avid BB7's . More expensive but far superior in every way.

    Well I've ordered a pair of replacement pads. If this solves the problem, I'll see how long they last before it happens again. I've had the bike nearly a year and with use once or twice a week I think thats not too bad considering how heavily I've breaked in the past.
