But I tohught speed cameras and the like were merely a profitable tax on the motorist and othing to do with safety and therefore they should pay for themselves in no time...

Yeah but these were for DIY traffic speed checking - without any enforcement powers.
Police should be happy with the free labour!!

To suggest that the public should provide funds for the purchase of a device to be used against them is laughable. Community councils have very restricted funding and as it comes from public funds there are strict limits on how it can be spent.
“If we did have funds of the size suggested we could find a lot more worthwhile projects to spend them on.
That's a nice attitude from the community council secretary there. "We want to speed ourselves but we don't want anyone else to speed. Unless they are in front of us getting in our way."

nothing new, allegedly, in my old village the comunity did pay for a flashing sign ,you know the 30 things that flash slow down if your going too fast !Unfortunately the funds didnt cover the wiring into the mains or whatever and took months to come on line !
Incidentaly, when we were kids there the road was a major route south, loads of trucks, two people i knew (kids) were mowed down . By pass took the trucks away overnight !Posted 12 years ago #
