    Just how much should a steel frame flex? If you can actually feel like you are bending it just by pedalling is that too much? Does it reduce pedalling efficiency? Is it likely to fall to pieces suddenly or does the flexing actually lessen this possibility? It's Reynolds 531 if this makes any difference.

    @recombodna

    That's a fine article - slightly biased but fundamentally sound.

    Should reassure Min.

    One thing that is not mentioned is manufacturing care/quality.

    I once had a catastrophic failure on a Dawes Galaxy (531) the downtube sheared at the headtube lug - a sign of overheating when brazed. The frame was only a few years old. The warranty replacement is still in use.

    Well I'm not sure exactly how old it is but it is 20+. I feel pretty sure that any manufacturing inadequacies would have been brought out by now!

    Good article Recombodna, thanks - it is reassuring!

    I was worried that it was getting soft in its old age. It did not like carrying panniers for my Melrose ride AT ALL which bothered me since it is really an old touring bike that has been pimped up. Plus my new cross bike feels a lot stiffer. But riding it this morning it actually just feels zippy and light (though I suppose it would compared to my other bikes) and I think that so long as I don't try to carry anything other than myself and a few bits and pieces the flexyness isn't a problem.

    You sure the problem isn't the rack, or unbalanced load?

    20yo is young for a decent steel frame...

    Pretty sure. The load wasn't unbalanced and I can't see what the problem would be with my rack. I use the same one on my other bikes without any problem. I also gave the seat stays a wiggle and they definately move more than the ones on my cross bike.
