Email pinged in from Google last night that my preordered Nexus tablet has shipped, and the TNT tracking site suggests that it's out for delivery today. Even better, the light of my life is on her enormous school teacher's holiday, so has been humbly requested to maybe stay in and sign for its arrival.

I'm hugely excited by this, and regard it as a personal victory to have not littered this post with exclamation marks.

My excuse for posting this in a cycling forum is that I chose this over other devices because it would fit horizontally in my rack top bag...

This is not to be underestimated. My tablet case was chosen specifically for size fitting into the Carradice, and additional padding for putting up with the ride (I take it to work maybe three times a week or so in order to get personal project stuff done at lunchtimes).

Carradice rack top, perchance? What did you go for? My testing consisted of lowering in an iPad (I wore gloves...) and seeing that it was too big. Then Google announced this, at a remarkably/relatively cheap price, and I was suckered...

These days I prefer (computer) devices that fit in my back pocket.

Tablets to laptops go in my Timbuk2(s).

One of the (seldom mentioned) real advantage of tablets over laptops is lack of (slightly) fragile hard drives - they tend to have tougher screens too.

Maybe those handlebar bags with map windows need to be resigned for specific tablets!

Nelson Longflap, which is mounted on their fancy seatpost mount things. Case is made by a company called Pakuma (using 100% recycled materials no less) and slips nicely into the back with the iPad onboard, so in case of fall protected by the bike, and on the other side by whatever is in the bag.

Neat solution that's worked so far (well, I've not fallen yet mind...).

Funny thinking how many decisions on things are based around how it'll be carried on the bike...

'Hug gears' - my mind hopes this is some kind of wool covered derailleur capable of dispensing comforting hugs on wet and cold days.

I suspect I'm missing something though.

@chdot, sadly a courier bag wouldn't really work with the recumbent, so the racktop serves in its place and hops between the 'bent and the upright. Modified now with buckles instead of velcro to attach it to the rack, after we parted company at speed...

I've toyed with idea of a tablet or a netbook type thing so I could do some work on the go, unfortunately I really need something with a pair of 24" screens and a good mouse to actually be able to do anything productive, so I've never bothered.

  12. Have to say I've found the tablet brilliant for typing on - had wondered if I'd need an external keyboard, but not a bit of it. Got my word processing app; got an html editor app; a brilliant photoshop-esque image manipulation app; script-writing app; and a fab notebook into which I can put scribbles to get my ideas into some sort of form. Use it so much more than a dinky netbook I used to have (which ran windows and so took half of lunchtime to start up and shut down).

My hope (albeit thought about after I'd actually placed the order) is to be able to use evernote to take notes from meetings and training sessions on the tablet and avoid having to use a paper notebook. Screen size might prove a limiting factor here, but we'll see.

Call me old fashioned, but I have a sketchpad and an artist's roll full of pens, pencils and suchlike. Heavier, bulkier and probably mroe expensive than a tablet!

Sounds like someone simply needs a larger courier bag. :> Maybe Trakke can develop the 'megatablet bag' or something.

For anyone who hasn't come across it -

Evernote is amazingly useful. It's cross-platform (on computers + mobiles) and can be used for text and images and clips from web pages. It will even OCR text in images (if it's clear enough - their examples include wine labels) so that text can be searched for (though not copied).

And it's free (monthly space allowance) unless you want to upload a lot of images.

My Nexus 7 arrived last week (yes, I was v quick off the mark). You're not going to be disappointed :-) And +1 for Evernote - great app.

For real sketching can't beat paper and pens. But site goes online digitally, and submissions for most bits of writing these days are digital. I've got (many) Moleskines for notekeeping as well, but transferring can be a pain. I 'prefer' notebooks, but practicality issues, and time-saving by not duplicating effort, make the tablet win out.

I don't know. A stylus and Sketchbook Pro do a good job. Only limitation is that it helps to wear a thin cotton glove with the index finger and thumb end cut off to stop inadvertent clicking and scrolling when you're resting your hand on the screen.

More like one of those water bombers the US fire brigades use to deal with forest fires.

I've started paying for Evernote, partly to get the 'allow others to edit shared notebooks' feature and partly becuase I use it heavily, so it seemed fair. The real shame is that the site is blocked on the MoD network.

Still no sign of the TNT van apparently. The tension builds.

Online tracker has just gone to "Shipment delivery address unknown, recovery actions underway". I see.

One grumpy call to TNT, coming right up.

Have you seen Hockney's table (ipad) art. It was a major factor in my wife's recent purchase (ipad)

"Pictures of early design concepts for the iPad made between 2002 and 2004 have been revealed through an Apple court filing."

    (Looks like half an iBook)

"It features many of the signature elements of the iPad, including rounded corners, a dock connector port at the bottom, a front panel dominated by a glass touchscreen, and a plain back with just the Apple logo."

    What?!

It does look like the lid of an iBook. Still pretty impressive to be that far advanced with the iPad. There's a similar story in the Isaacson biography of Jobs having a computer the size of a desk diary (so about the size of the titanium powerbook) designed and mocked up before they'd even built the first Macintosh and saying "this is what I was us to be building in the mid-80s".

Ha, Google managed to put as the address only 'Flat 0/2 Glasgow'.

And then did similar things to 4499 other people.

    Way to mail merge, guys.

Other note taking apps are available.
You might like to try OneNote, Darkerside.

Free apps for 'droids, iPhone and browsers and seamless integration with Skydrive and MSOffice. (And the searchable images thing too, of course)

One you start using one, it's tough to switch.....still sketch on paper then snapshot on phone straight into the notebook.

That should be enough, doesn't your postman know your name. Its not like Glasgow is a very big place :D
