People who went to the meeting in March were handed a questionnaire, the results are in.

Important messages from the survey are…

Top priority is more and better onroad facilities, especially cycle lanes

Close second is better maintained road surfaces and coloured surfacing

The council should also experiment with fully-segregated onroad facilities

Top priority corridors needing action are City Centre to Leith, and East/West across the city centre

Top blackspots are Picardy Place and Haymarket

"Top blackspots are Picardy Place and Haymarket"

    I avoid them both!

Perhaps we can combine all aims by painting a red cycle lane round the outside of the roundabout at Picardy Place? ;-)

I have to say I have enjoyed the closure of Meadow Place on several ocassions now, not so sure about the cycle lane along Melville Drive though, as I find it a bit more stressful now when I want to turn right up Marchmont Road.

"I find it a bit more stressful now when I want to turn right up Marchmont Road"

Why has it made it worse?

It is interesting to see the actual results, and it has to be remember that this was very much a self selecting group. I would like to see a more robust analysis of the data, SPOKES needs to recruit a statistician, preferably one used to working with non-parametric data.

With such a small "self selecting group" don't think it would be statistically any more significant.

Before, I used to ride along in the traffic and then move across to the white line about half way along, once it's wide enough. Now you more or less have to stay in the lane, so you're much closer to the gutter and you have to time a "break" across the stream of passing vehicles more carefully.

It serves the primary purposes of a cycle lane well enough - reassures nervous cyclists and allows cars to drive a bit faster and pass a bit closer, since they have a line to aim for instead of worrying about overtaking. But it's definitely no improvement to the regular cyclist, IMO.

On our recumbent ride this weekend I noticed a distinct drop in care whenever we got to a cycle laned section. Perhaps it's something to make a video of!?
