Got a bike to sell, but I'm a bit clueless on knowing what's a fair price to ask.

Edinburgh Bicycle Connection, small frame, 700 wheels, 18 speed. Probably about 15 or 16 years old, but in pretty good condition as it's not had all that much use for its age. Front mudguard needs some attention but apart from that its pretty sound.

Any advice on price (or if anyone's interested) I'd appreciate it.

NB: I'm only speaking as a punter, not someone who's ever sold a bike. I'm also not a punter who's never really looked for a hybrid. Pinch of salt ready, in other words.

I poked around a bit just now by arranging Gumtree's offers by price and scrolling down until I reckoned your bike is shinier than the ones on sale. I'd say that was around the £120 mark.

It looks like standard practise is to put it in at more than you think it's worth, and then reposting once every two or three days at a tenner or so less; I think the ads are like forum posts in that once they're off the front page, they no longer exist for 85% of the audience.

I look most closely at ads where there are closeups of the mechs, bars and brakes. If I've seen that they're in good nick, the bike becomes radically more interesting.

That helps date the one I picked up on Gumtree last year for £35, which is only ten speed, has an older-looking font (and is officially labelled a "town and trail connection"), lacked mudguards or a rack, had two fairly knackered tyres, dead-looking spokes and garbage brakes, but was a sound 25" frame. That one appears to have a Reynolds CrMo sticker on the downtube, so yes, about £120 if all it needs is a mudguard-fettle.

A set of mudguards and a rack you're looking at around £40-50 new anyway, it's a decent make and much better built and specced than most new £120 "bikes" so I think that price very suitable. People can always haggle with you if they don't agree!
