Scotland’s Infrastructure Secretary Keith Brown said: “Scotland’s railways are enjoying a period of success not seen since the time that the old Waverley line was built in the Victorian era, largely thanks to the Scottish Government’s record levels of investment, but also because the people of Scotland see the benefits of rail.

line will be officially opened by the Queen on Wednesday, who will travel in a steam train

My other half has heard it will be the *Union of South Africa. At least, I think that is what he was trying to describe. "The African Union, the green equivalent of the Sir Nigel Gresley". So could be anything really..

*I was pleased to be able to outgeek him in the train department but to be fair, I only know it because I saw it by accident once.

    Correct!

services will be hauled by the popular 60009 Union of South Africa, one of six remaining LNER Class A4 steam locomotives in the UK, built in Doncaster in 1937.

Now villagers hope it will be turned into a small museum or cycle hire shop, something to entice tourists to step off the train and spend some time there.

Some suggestion that an extra carriage was found for the steam excursions, so maybe not all sold out? Obviously this is not a fact, just a comment at the end of the article.

@Laidback; you have to be aware that after Newcraighall the Borders Waverley Shortbread Railway disappears into the bushes to magically re-appear at an 'industrial estate' in Tweedbank, from thence a 2 mile hike to Abbotsford House (wallow in shortbread, scones, tea, and Sir Walter's mythical musings)! It's all a bit Hogwart's Express to me! At Tweedbank you can visit the shed belong to the Scottish Pensions Agency, or the former Foot and Mouth Bunker! At Galashiels you can muse at the 'closed' Borders College edifice, or cruise the numerous charity shops in the main street. Stow has the famous 'Pack Horse Bridge'. Ni'tton has the now capped Lady Victoria Pit Museum covered in coal dust.
ps no water for Steam Trains in the Borders as ScottishWater would have to charge 'business rate'!

Since no.9 won't magically appear in Edinburgh, you east coasters might want to look out for it - in tandem with 60163 Tornado, no less - when it comes up to Millerhill tomorrow:

I haven't found timings for Wednesday yet, but here are the timings for Edinburgh to Tweedbank on Thursday 10th:

    That'll be for 'security' reasons!

What happened to the days yonder, when you could find out when the Queen was going to pass by, and go and wave to her?

Who is winning here, the terrorists? or us?

Wow. I am a long way from being a railway buff, but when she pokes her nose out from the steam, it really gets the hairs on the back of your neck.

The brown and cream coach? It's a travelling bar named Pegasus and contains "The Trianon Bar". It was built for the Golden Arrow boat train to impress visitors from France arriving to the Festival of Britain.
