Perhaps not the most appropriate section of the forum but I'm not sure where else it would be better suited so please indulge me...

I headed out for a cycle this morning aiming to do TBC's Pentlands loop to bag my first 50 mile cycle. I missed a junction and ended up travelling to Biggar from Carnwath.

I wanted to post something to say thank you to the chap who passed me as I'd stopped after Carnwath to take on some food, asking if I was ok and then cycling with me to Biggar, keeping me company and breaking up the monotony before he then headed off to Broughton. I've no idea what he was riding and if he's a forumer but, if he is - from the lady on the red Decathlon bike, thank you: I made it home and bagged my first metric century (solo) in just shy of four hours.

I was coming back from Carnwath this morning approx 10.30am. I was approaching the Tarbrax turning and a female cyclist was heading to Carnwath. We said hello to each other. The next cyclist I encountered was taking the right turn down to Tarbrax, also female and the next one just after the Tarbrax turning was a woman on a red bike? Three separate women all out on their tod. Good to see. None were wearing Team sky colours.

As the others said, well done, good stuff :)

Grantown Gallop isn't far away if you fancy repeating the feat in company (though possibly ata more gentle pace!)

    Thanks all.

Gembo: the timings sound about right so could well have been my first spot. I passed two ladies shortly around that time too (I think).

I was on new very white bike, that can only get out on very dry days. There was a bit of wind yesterday too (tho not as much as today). From what you say, I think you were the first of the three women? The one who said hello, so that's a spot. I am also wondering if at Carnwath you took the very windy (Twister) road to Biggar. We didnthisninnthe car once and number one daughter chucked up her sugar puffs at Biggar.?

Is there a map for this route somewhere?

I did take the Biggar road though don't remember it being particularly twisty at pootling speed. I'd imagine it probably would be Sugar Puff-spewing material in a car though...

Not sure, ARobComp. Directions I was (making a poor attempt at) following here:

Gembo: how fearsome are the climbs on the Col du Climpy route? Reads like there's a fair bit of hard climbing in there but I'm game for it.

I can make it from the very bottom to very top of Kaimes Road with 20 miles in my legs: any danger of not managing the Climpy climb?

@MeepMeep there is nothing like as steep as Kaimes Road on the CdC. It's a fairly long drag to the top, but it's never at an out-of-the-saddle sort of gradient. And you're going up through forest past the windfarm, it's rather nice and then you whoosh over the top towards Forth.

How does one find the route maps on the Bike Chain website? I've poked around a bit, but cannot find them.

They're normally here, but I had that in my history I don't know if you can navigate there from the site.

@steveo, that link does not work for me, it gives me a 404 not found error.

Fimm: try the below (I remember the URLs are pedantic, requiring a forward slash at their close to be valid)...

    http://www.thebikechain.co.uk/Road-Route-2-Col-du-Climpy/

    http://www.thebikechain.co.uk/Road-Route-1-Pentlands-Circuit/

There's a third but I don't know it by name, I'm afraid. A google for "citycyclingedinburgh 40 mile routes" should bring up a thread where all three of TBC's road routes are listed.

As an aside, I did the CdC last night. It was a beautiful route but the cross- and head-winds from the Climpy road back to Edinburgh made the last half of the journey rather slow going and particularly painful...

I find it easier with maps (plus, that avoids the Biggar-Edinburgh road, which is a bit grim).

Really must get out and explore more of the local(ish) roads - LaidBack showed me a couple in East Lothian I wasn't aware of last time out :)

Thank you for that, Dave. I was more interested in the Col du Climpy route, and have already mapped it out here: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5579100

If col du climpying during the day do remember to pay a visit to the apple pie bakery in Carnwath. In the centre of the village, just turn right at the traffic lights, can leave bikes outside
