    I worked with the RSPB one summer in the Abernethy remnant, the largest and most pristine fragment of the old Caledonian forest. Their plan was to regenerate naturally on a timescalle of hundreds of years, based on careful deer management and removal of non-native species, and not much more than that. Slow, but effective.

    Yes, I don't think you can rush ancient woodland.

    Yes - you don't want too many trees all with the same age.
