Cyclist dies in Olympic media bus crash

A cyclist has been killed in a crash with an Olympic media bus on the border of the Olympic Park in east London. The man, believed to be aged 30, was injured just before 19:45 BST at the junction of Ruckholt Road and East Cross Road, Hackney.
Police and an air ambulance attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene about half an hour later.

"The police are investigating and our thoughts are with the cyclist's family," Olympic organisers Locog said.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

    Possible eye witness account http://www.reddit.com/r/bicycling/comments/xiud7/just_sat_down_with_some_poor_bloke_for_his_last/

Having almost been wiped out by a bus in London on Friday, it's very scary & you get the distinct impression that some of the drivers have no idea how long their vehicles are & have forgotten your presence the minute you pass out of view.

Surprised to hear a soundbite from Wiggo ,calling for helmets to be compulsery in relation to this story?

Wiggo looking like a bit of a twit now: "Once there are laws passed for cyclists then you are protected and you can say, ‘well, I have done everything to be safe’ "

A nice turn of phrase - banning all sorts of cycling is "a law passed for cyclists" (not clear at all how it would help reduce deaths caused by left-turning vehs anyway).

How about a law making it illegal to drive a long vehicle in urban areas without adequate mirrors, Wiggo? You're in a position to campaign for something useful now, go on.

seems the media have all picked up on the helmet line.
actually disappointed in Wiggo on this.
He is in a position(was?) to promote many of the issues cyclists face.

"You can get killed if you don’t have a helmet on"

    thoughtless and unhelpful comment

Bad news. Any chance of shifting focus to the vehicle and driver rather thanh the headgear of the cyclist? Just heard Wiggins asking for things not to continue as they are with everyone moaning at each other.

Bearing in mind another sad fatality wiggins is perhaps pragmatically saying that if you are properly kitted and know what you are doing, you will still be vulnerable to the behaviour of some drivers but the drivers' lawyers will not be able to argue against the victim.

Alas this will probably degenerate into the usual helmet debate which I think distracts from the fact that cyclists are the victims of driver behaviour.

would have been better if wiggo called for strict liability, maybe we can get him todo this rather than flaming him in a helmet argument?

Definitely felt let down when I heard wiggo saying this then I thought a) He has just been asked a random cycle safety question in the middle of a press conference about winning a gold medal and b) why did I expect someone who is excellent at making a bicycle go fast for long periods of time to also be an advocate for utility cycling in the first place ?

So certainly not helpful, definitely an opportunity missed but I don't think we can really blame the guy.

I think that's being fantastically generous, since he also wants to get away from things continuing as they are (rather than dealing with dangerous driving, we pay the victims less compensation in the hopes this will somehow cause others to avoid cycling in front of drunks, speedophiles or the non-mirror-checkers).

Still, to be realistic with our expectations for a moment - the only requirement of a racing cyclist is that they can make a bike go fast. Understanding road safety or public health issues isn't really part of the brief, is it?

The way the media works, he will have a platform though and will be asked questions.

Some of the media will use that to back their own prejudices, basically that it is cyclists at fault.

Yes, some cyclists don't wear helmets, some jump red lights, some cycle on pavements etc etc. But far more important is that it is bad driving that kills cyclists (and pedestrians) and that's where the focus should be. We need safer roads for all by better behaviour (especially by drivers) and better facilities.

Not a great line, but he was under pressure, had none of the details, and was put on the spot. We don't even know what's happening yet.

Not going to let it change my opinion of Wiggo. Shame the media got ahold of that item.

Heart goes out to that guys family.

Not sure it is useful to give so much credence to views of gold medallist on road safety - how about Steve Redgrave on the Costa Concordia?

I agree he was under some duress and it's obvious that he is rambling a bit but I doubt he made up the core view on the spur of the moment.

Some cynics are waiting for the Wiggin's Roundel brand helmet in time for Christmas…

  26. Aye, Twitter turned into a helmet-debate hang-Wiggins storm last night. It's still not clear absolutely if he was commenting when he knew about the death of the cyclist (latest reports are now saying 'when asked about the incident' - that reflects worse on Wiggins).

Question, how many people who have allegedly bought a new bike, or dug out the old dusty bike from the shed, because of the Tour and Olympic success, will have now put it away cos Brad says they should wear helmets? I'll wager that those people who are new or returning to cycling are exactly the type who will think you must wear a helmet anyway and so will have been waiting to get one.

His views are his own, whether you disagree with them or not (and I do disagree) he is entitled to have them. He's just won a gold medal and is being blitzed by the media (he looked utterly dazed speaking to Lineker on the telly) and someone throws in a question about cycle safety. And now people hate him.

I don't. I love the guy. In much the same way as I love Yohann Cabaye (Newcastle footballer) but couldn't care less what his opinions are on cycling or religion or food (unless it involves hatred). I lvoe them for their sporting achievements and prowess. Not for how they think.

He's entitled to have them no doubt, and be criticised for them; that comes with the territory of having the national media hanging on your every word.
