Going to Newcastle for 3 days next week with my wife. We're getting the train to Alnmouth on the way there and cycling down from there. Then I've to come up with a nice ride for the next day. The 3rd day we're planning to see Newcastle itself. So a few queries:

    1. Should we follow NCN1 from Alnmouth to Newcastle, or an alternative route?

    2. Any ideas for a 40 to 50 mile ride on the 2nd day? Perhaps Hadrians Cycleway? Or train to somewhere maybe Durham and cycle back?

    3. Any hidden gems in/around Newcastle itself?

    All replies gratefully received :)

I have done NCN1 from Newcastle to Berwick upon Tweed. The good bit of the route is from Berwick upon tweed to south of alnmouth where there is a national park heading south after the national park it is not so nice but the route is traffic free. at the start in alnmouth there is a very excellent tea room and art gallery in the old school house. This is sort of between the train station and the town so actually in the wrong direction but very nice. ( I hope it is still there any roads). At the end Tynemouth is lovely with market and little cafes. Routes from Berwick upon tweed to Belford or bamburgh and sea houses all nice. I don't know about south of Newcastle.
