Part of me thinks 'bloody press, can you not let the man celebrate in peace', while another part thinks 'fags? really?'. Dare say Wiggins is only an occasional smoker, but still.

Roll up. Perhaps not an ordinary cigarette.

"Roll up. Perhaps not an ordinary cigarette."

I would hope not, at his age, and with the amount of drugs tests he has to take, that would mean his career...

Judging by the way he's holding that, it's a joint not a cigarette. Anyway I agree the press ought to cut the guy some slack!

  6. Yep, that's no cigarette.

Certainly a risk, given the amount of out-of-season/home testing done in cyclnig. Though I'd imagine it clears your system pretty quickly. Always wondered why it was a banned substance (despite it being illegal) given I can't imagine it has got much performance enhancing potential.

I know it's banned but hardly performance enhancing. I've seen the Magic Roundabout.

It is possible to hold a cigarette in more than one way...

Is Wiggins so silly as to smoke a joint in a public place?

Hmm, this is starting to look more sinister to me (sorry, I'm conservative, can't help it!). Photos appear in press of him apparently (and stupidly) smoking a joint, and on a second look and having a think back to my youf I now agree, he can expect a knock on the door at any time!

Performance enhancing or not, he knows the rules, and if he did get collared he would deservedly lose the lot, credibility as a clean athlete, the gold medal, and tour win would be tainted (again). I REALLY hope that was just a cigarette!

    He'd be fine:

"Under WADA’s rules, athletes face a two-year ban if cannabis is found in their system while they are in competition.

But the anti-doping body does not sanction those who test positive for marijuana outside of competition times, while they are in training camps or during rest periods."

I think cannabis is legal in Spain?

And with regards to the in-competition/out-of-competition issue he would need to be mindful of how quickly it leaves the system given that he is competing in a stage race in Denmark starting this weekend (along with Cav and what looks like a pretty strong Sky team, especially considering they look like they will also have a competitive GC team running in the Vuelta)

He is competing next week, this is very much in season.

Frankly it's his own concern if he enjoys a (rather modestly sized) spliff after a hectic TdF and Olympics campaign. I can't imagine there'll be anything left in his system by next week. A blood transfusion the day before the race would help, obviously ;-)

The photo sequence is quite amusing. First we see Wiggo toking, then he gets all loved up, then has an attack of the munchies! If this doesn't cement his cult status and slightly 'bad boy' image I don't know what will. Might not get 'arise Sir Wiggins' though...*

THC passes out of the bloodstream in hours.

"blood concentrations of THC peak 9 minutes after smoking; after 10 minutes only two-thirds of the concentration remains, and it is down to 5 to 10% at the end of an hour; after two hours, it becomes difficult to detect."

It hangs around in fat cells for longer and passes out in urine. In ordinary human beings, inactive metabolites of THC can be detected for between 2 and 7 days in the urine of an occasional user. But the length of the detection window is related to both body fat and metabolic rate so it's likely that it's much shorter for elite athletes.

So, if it is a spliff, it'll be long gone by the time he gets back on his bike.

Does not look like a joint to me, unless rolled in a cigarette rolling machine. He is holding the fag/doobie in a poncey manner regardless of what is in it. He does then get the munchies and takes his Fred perry off. THC detected in hair analysis for a very long time

WADA don't do hair, do they? But maybe that's why he's called Wiggo.

Is that rested or "rested" I wonder??

Anyway, poor guy could probably do with a bit of time off.

    Hehe, from http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/19089596

"The great thing about cycling is that this facility here didn't cost anything to build. They didn't even resurface the road, it was terrible in places.

"So when this is all over anybody can go ride that circuit and pretend they're one of us. That's the great thing with cycling, anybody can do it."

No decision has been reached yet on when the 32-year-old star will make his return to competition.

Well he can put his feet up now, and get the bong out
