It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.

Based on the way they have profiled the embankment, my money is it on being a double switchback or "W" shape, with 3 hairpin bends to negotiate on the way up.
The pilings (highlighted pink/white) prevent anything like the original alignment being followed, and it would be much too steep to simply try and directly connect that bit to the higher part of the path.
The hairpins will be pretty tight if there are three of them, although there should be plenty space for the one at the top.
There's plenty of space to do things properly; with a bit of excavation further back up the existing path the gradient could be kept the same or made even more shallow.
And another thing! This should already have been finished in a city that cared about cyclists.

Yes, I have been peering through the windows of the train on the way past and realised that there was a bit more tram stuff to go in, as kaputnik has shown. That is nothing like finished, so why should the path up the embankment be?
The diversion route had a new alignment this morning, differing from that of last night, with no ramp to drop the kerbs in 2 places. At the very least it's now slightly wider than it used to be, but the whole "ride along the pavment" thing is entirely illogical when there is a very wide and completely unused road sitting behind the fencing.

Ok, not finished, but some better alternative. It would not have been difficult to maintain some kind of access, even if it was just temporary steps with a pushing ramp.

@ kaputnik - apparently the ramps had been removed as a "trip hazard" (I stopped, I asked, and got a slighlty exasperated explanation from a couple of workmen ...).
Apparently too, things should be approaching old normal next week (though it'll be DETH on a greasy stick for anything on two wheels the first few times it rains, judging by the colour of the road surface).

That's a handy route available to me again when I'm in the car!
I rather enjoyed it on the bike over the last year, despite the slow bit in the middle.

Yup, it should now have a good thick layer of mud and diesel if other works round the trams are anything to go by.
Russell Road was indeed open end-to-end at 7pm this evening as I walked to Murrayfield. Not a single car was seen using it, which was pleasant.

Of course that won't last - but they've managed well enough for the past year, so why not keep it shut to through traffic??

As a key entry route to the Roseburn path this could have been made so much better for cyclists. The previous turn onto the pavement was a textbook study of how not to do cycle infrastructure. Now with a longer darker tunnel of bridges is the time to re-do this.
Mind you the proposed pram ramp onto the path supposes that bikes come in one size, go in one direction and never meet on corners.
I can't think of anything touched by the tram that has improved matters for cyclists so far.

I'm wondering if they are a simple early-warning device for high vehicles - they may be indicative of a lower bridge further on. Although you'd perhaps expect them to be marked in some way if so.
Yes. The railway bridge is lower than the tram one. It's to stop people from assuming that both are the same height and smacking the second one. Thank goodness the road has reopened. It has been a complete PITA having it closed.

The existing bridge has a habit of eating unwary double decker buses. I assume they've built the tram bridge to new specifications to accomodate them, even though the wide deck of the railway bridge can't.
