"especially people like Tyler Hamilton now raking it in and getting awards on the back of his "regret" at having stolen wins and prize money, contracts and honours"

I got the TH Secret Race book as a present so haven't contributed to his wealth directly (!)

A few years ago people may have read LA's books in the hope of understanding pro racing mentality. TH's book, for all it's faults, does show how the Omerta (code of silence) worked in keeping the KOTD off the hook. That and LA's ability to get the UCI to check out anyone else that threatened him. He got the UCI to get TH to turn up in person at the UCI HQ in Switzerland after tipping them off that he thought Hamilton's performance was 'not natural' (!). One of the only times a TdF rider was ever summoned there. That's how much influence he wielded.

TH admits that he was desperate to take whatever the lead riders had as this was the mark of being a pro. Lesser riders wouldn't be offered 'assistance'.

Of course the TH vs LA slanging match will roll on as Lance thought he had a beautiful thing going - spoiled by amateurs. Firstly he knew that the previous Euro riders (Riis, Pantani and Ullrich) were at it anyway and he was determined to do even more. He viewed the whole thing as a military campaign and 'refuseniks' need not apply. If you're going to do it, then do it properly, was his motto. Lie big and shoot down anything in your airspace!

Sky may, or may not be operating to the letter of the law, but the attitude is exactly the same. The athletes are simply spreadsheets to be manipulated, a science experiment to get the best numbers, shame.

@baldcyclist I understand your disillusionment but, out of interest, what do you expect professional teams to do? Get some guys together, give them the same kit and say "off you go lads" and see what happens?

I don't know, but one thing the doping era certainly did (or at least the Doctors behind it), was to make cycling more scientific.

Much has been said about how Ferrari looked at cyclists as a simple maths problem, I think Brailsford and his team does exactly the same.

Somehow watching 3 weeks of maths unfold on the TV seems less romantic than I first imagined cycling to be?

Maybe my perception of the sport has just changed?

    Mmm

Certainly have been some Tours where the outcome seems to have been fairly predictable (Lance??...)

But the Froome events last year didn't seem to fit any formula!

Don't most people watch the Tour to see the sunflower and marvel at the road surfaces and the peloton splitting round roundabouts and the helicopter shots of chateaux?

Why are we giving a proven liars' speculations any air time? Contrition involves humility, could be difficult for LA, but if he means it???

From Eddy Merckx -"I was quite close to him: he often looked me right in the eyes when we discussed doping, and of course it was a big ‘no'".

Walsh said: “I know this is going to sound preposterous but I felt a little but of sympathy for Armstrong.

“Intellectually he had to be remorseful, but emotionally he couldn’t do it. Basically, Armstrong knew what he had to do but he wasn’t capable of doing it because obviously he’s got serious personality issues.

"Australia library in Armstrong pledge prank"

"All non-fiction books by the cyclist, including "Lance Armstrong: Images of a Champion", would soon be moved to the fiction section, it read."

A library has found humour in this sad affair :)

I note that a blu-ray rip of The Armstrong Lie has today appeared on the usual pirate internets.

I am watching it but it is getting past my bedtime and I may give up soon. I was expecting more of a hatchet job but it seems rather sympathetic.

Watched the Armstrong thing on iPlayer last night. Really grim. Nothing to do with cycling as such, just the capacity of the man to do what he did and persuade a group of people round about him to join in or at least keep schtum.

    Posted 9 years ago #
  30. He came across as a really nasty, vindictive piece of work on the documentary that they showed the night before. I'm not surprised people either joined him or kept quiet afterwards - he had the power to trash reputations, ruin lives and ruin businesses if you crossed him (and he exercised that power at every opportunity).

    A very scary man.
