Where is that?
I'm sure anth could clear it up but wouldn't taking your bike with out permission constitute theft? Notice or no notice?

Ah never thought to click on the picture to get your photo stream, makes sense now.
In some respects i can see the point, those two bikes are in the way of a busy thoroughfare and chained to a pole they are quite likely to fall down.
The counter argument is there is nothing to say not to but do we really need to be told not to put our bikes in the way?

and they need more 'proper' parking in the worst way.

There's *my* bike!
Interesting to see how busy it gets during the day. I'm usually parked up by 8am and don't get back to the bike until 6.30pm.
There's usually a space or two on the racks when I arrive, although with the warmer weather this week I had to lock up to the railings once. When a Glasgow train is emptying the pavements along here get *very* crowded, so those to bikes nearer the station would get in the way and possibly damaged/kicked.
The roadworks have now largely been removed so the are has a slightly more open feel to it.

Whilst i agree they do need better bike parking, that's no excuse. If a car were double parked and some one called them out about it the drivers first defence would be well they should provide better parking facilities. To which we would reply find a better parking place and don't be so lazy, take your bike, walk or get the bus, same applies here

it does smack of jobsworth becoming very annoyed about something and printing off what they thought was a devilishly witty note. What's with the chain cutting though, obviously a daily mail reader.
Oh right, the lock chain, not the drive train. Sorry, nothing to see here.

It does annoy me that Scotrail claim there is bike parking at Haymarket Station when they actually mean there are some bike racks a few doors down the road, outside the local pub.
The lamp post above would seem like a reasonable place to lock a bike to at most times of the day, as there is quite a lot of pavement there. It's really only when there is a train emptying that they would be in the way.
Of course the potential for terrorism by hiding pipe bombs in the bicycle frame cannot be understated and I hope the authorities do not rest until our streets are cleared from places to hide pipe bombs.

Hell, even where there ARE warning signs you can't necessarily just remove a bike. Naturally, I've written about it before... :P

The fact that there isn't anything saying you can't park there is the biggest issue here! And has the person who left the note taken down details of the specific bikes this time so they don't cut the chain off two other random bikes the next time and say 'well people WERE warned!'?
On the flip side, I'm with Steveo on this - it's a bit of a daft place to leave your bike - less so if we ever have the foresight to cover the city in Cyclehoops, which would at least stop the bikes from having any possibilty of falling down.
Seriously, if you think a Sheffield stand is a good and simple option for bike locking, how about using the existing street furniture properly!

There were no bikes there at 8am but the notice *was* there.

Haymarket has been a nightmare beyond 8 a.m. for years (made slightly worse by tram roadworks) much better facilities at Waverley, or York or even Larbert in Falkirkshire where they have stuck the racks under the bridge thus keeping the bikes dry.
I liked the cycle hoop idea but noted the bike was locked via frame and back wheel in the picture on the website, tho probably could just turn the bike round and indeed have it on pavement side rather than road side, so this was probably more for the photograph. When I have a worry about all bits of bike being there on return but if I haven't taken enough locks I usually go with frame and front wheel figuring a backwheel is more of a footer to get off?

I use one of these (2.5') for the front wheel.
