Pavement reconstruction? (UPDATE - Gorgie Road, work finished)

They are doing some temporary overnight road restrictions on the stretch of Gorgie Road between the Dalry Road junction and the Robertson Avenue junction for "pavement reconstruction". Now I have nothing against pavements being repaired - but what about the road? It is in a much worse state than the pavement!!!

@Fimm I passed a "road closures" sign for Gorgie Road on Dundee Street heading towards Diggers' this morning. Didn't clock the full details but I assumed perhaps they were resurfacing Gorgie Road. Hope I'm not wrong!

Judging by the road markings i'd say they were going to do the whole road not just he pavements. Could pavement reconstruction be cooncil speak for resurfacing?

Suppose they want to sort out the footpaths before they spend the best part of 2 months digging up Gorgie Road.

"Pavement" is transport speak for road surface/sub-surface. The thing everyone refers to as "the pavement" is known as a footway. Technically "a road" also includes any associated footway and verges, with the thing most people know as "the road" being technically known as "the carriageway".

So, from cb's post above it looks like they are actually going to re-surface the road.

WOOHOO!!!!!!! That is one of the worst bits of road surface that I cycle on a regular (or even occassional) basis.

Update: we had a leaflet through the door telling us that the Gorgie Road is going to be resurfaced on that stretch and giving information about road closures etc.

if it could then go along to the stretch beside the jail that would be good too

    Certainly entertaining today.

Temporary lights didn't want to let people out of Dalry Road when I was there - I got off and pushed across.

I'd stopped in the ASL box only to find I couldn't see the lights (not) change!

I think one might have to pretend the ASL isn't there for the time being. On Monday I decided that filtering all the to the front wasn't worth it and joined the queue a few cars back. Yesterday it looked like there was more room so I went to the front, where I was joined by two other cyclists!

Yesterday morning (7:30ish) the lights were not working at all and a workman was directing the traffic.

Does anyone know if it is possible to view details of the way they are going to repaint the road online?

"Loading only" in the path of where the cycle lane should be. Business as usual then for the quantum council.

Yes, I got to cycle that stretch of new tarmac fro the first time this morning. The loading/parking places have gone back in exactly where they were before, in front of the shops on that side of the road. There is space for vehicles to pass them - it is more of a problem if a car prevents buses from pulling in properly to the stop.

It will be interesting to see if anything changes up in front of the Barnados shop, where a parked vehicle will cause problems.

However the really notable thing is the cycle lane at the traffic island just behind where you are standing to take the photo. The old cycle lane narrowed at the pinch point - the new one does not!! Result!!

Its tragic what we consider a victory in this world class cycling city.

"Its tragic what we consider a victory in this world class cycling city."

Yeah it highlights 'process' and 'fear of needing to manage expectations/objections'

There would almost certainly need to be an alteration to the Traffic Regulation Order which allowed the parking bay in the first place.

Consultation with objectors (almost inevitably there would be some) would delay the rest of
    the work.

Not sure if CEC is 'pragmatic' or unwilling to push it, knowing no guarantee of success. Though I would be a bit surprised if the law is framed in such a way as to favour objectors(?)

Aggregation of marginal gains, innit? ;-) One more better piece of infrastructure is one more piece of better infrastructure... <Glass half full>

What would be good, of course, is if the loading bays were properly policed so that they were only used for loading. No, Mr motorway maintainance truck, often parked outside the shops opposite LIDL, buying a newspaper does not count as "loading".

I was walking along that way on Saturday, it looked civilized, mainly because the parking restrictions were still in place. The parking bay outside Barbados that causes all the problems however is still there.

I'll go that way this morning though I expect its back to normal except with nice smooth surface for a while.

Yes, indeed, all done :-) I'm looking forward to the return journey this evening, when I get my first chance to cycle the section I used to hate outside Gorgie City Farm. I'll actually have to think about my road position there as the default "right in the middle of the lane to avoid all the potholes" is no longer required!

As far as I can tell, all the road markings have gone back pretty much the way they were.

It was better this morning, I don't think people realise its open yet. Not sure about the red chippings they felt rough, be interesting to see how they wear with buses running in them and cars parking on them.

We rode it yesterday evening - it's the same as before, but fewer pot-holes. Still lots of cars 'loading' (not sure where they're loading as there weren't any shops open...).

@lionfish, I don't know the exact rules off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure they don't apply on Sundays...
