    Hi Folks,

Heading to Wolftrax on Sunday with my Cousin who is up for a week. Anyone been - whats it like? We could go to the 'other' route at Nevis range (non-downhill competition route) on Sunday instead but the competition means we have to give priority to the competitors. Would you recomend Wolftrax over Nevis even though its downhill competion weekend? Not looking for crowds but empty trails and stumming views, oh and fabulous weather (guess you can't help with that).

    Cheers,

    Dave C

  2. Wolftrax is great fun. The boardwalk section is swoopy and fast, the 'Slab' is just utter brilliance. Me and my brother just stood at the bottom giggling after riding it the first time, and had to go back and do it again. There's a pic of me riding it in Singeltrack form a few years back.

The final berms and jumps flow beautifully, so easy to get air (even when, like me, it feels entirely unnatural, I was clearing doubles and wooping all the way down).

Hmm I'm not big on air, mainly as I can't do it without landing front wheel first and crashing out. Think I'll where my knee pads and skid lid.

  4. Lid I'd say is a necessity at any of these MTB centres. The Slab is black graded, but bypassed easily. And the doubles etc on the run in are easily flattened out.

I can't comment on the mountain biking quality at Wolftrax but I can highly recommend a local cake shop at the Pottery Bunkhouse a couple of miles down the road (Map). We stop there every time we pass by on the way to visit family up north and the cakes are excellent.

Wolftrax is great, and if I can do the black run - so can you !

Almost lost a shoe falling in a bog, mind you - not the most nimble at picking way over those rocks en route up.

Second what WC said about the berms etc on way down - magic fun - wish it was just up the road.

One of my mates was talking about the pottery hostel too - said it was really cool.

I've also stayed at the Pottery Bunkhouse (for the purpose of walking up hills) and recall it being very pleasant. (I think that is the place that has a hot tub that wasn't working the time we stayed there - but it was a while ago.)

Is this the same Pottery Shed as the one at Insh? We popped in there as an Audax control on Saturday. It has lots of plant beds and sells very very nice cakes!

DaveC, this one is near Laggan. Insh is over near Kincraig/Aviemore, isn't it?

Dave, you are thinking of Inshriach which has better cakes than the Pottery Bunkhouse. Even though I've never been to the Pottery Bunkhouse I still stand by that.

Wolftrax is fun, especially the 'long red' route at the very top, a sweeping downhill section, with good views down the Glen looking west. Two gripes; the cost of the landrover shuttle (good exercise to just cycle up?) and the fact it could be larger with a few more routes. I'd recommend the Pottery Bunkhouse, confortable and clean, but the 'hot tub' hasn't worked for years (check the visitor book), the owner is nice but a bit fussy. Hope you get a good run of weather... oh!..the hire bikes are OK.

All the black rock sections are all actually pretty easy if you pre-walk them. The lines are pretty difficult to spot until you've done 'em or looked at 'em. But technically they're not that bad, often just steep.

Well Wolftrax was great fun and reminded me of what I keep missing out on. We headed up and rode the Orange route which is great fun with fast sweeping curves and berms, and table top jumps. After that we tried the upper Black Route which I walked down 20% of due to their steep rocky cliff faces. We tried the Orange route again as my mate smokes and was finding it difficult to breath letalone ride up the landrover track. I on the other hand with my road fitness was flying up and down. After lunch we headed up for one more run and I tried the lower red run, more in the trees and wetter as puddles were hidden from the drying effects of the sun. Its a shame its so far away and I'm not resolved to try out Devlin Woods ?? near Kincardine Bridge as its pretty close to where we live.

£3 to park and it has an early Glen Tress feel with portacabins instead of dedicated new buildings in flash surroundings.
