"Officers believe building their new five-gear vehicle, which has a top a speed of 20mph"

It's battery assisted so they'd be breaking the law if they went that fast under electric power.

But, seriously, what *are* they thinking? What bit of this is a good idea?

(Noticed yesterday - by reading over someone's shoulder - that this story made it into the London Metro, but not the Edinburgh one).

Yes but it was a school project during lunch breaks etc and:

OK, the world as we know it is dying from pollution, more and more species are becoming extinct, a meteor or solar flare could wipe us out at any second and Lily Allen won three Ivor Novello song writing awards...

Thats quite cool actually, i can haz?

Would deal with the perceived problem of recumbents and velo mobiles being out of the visual perception of drivers. No driver in the world misses and flashing blue light and reflective blue trim!

Actually I'm not sure it would. For starters, a remarkable number of high-viz vehicles are crashed into (perhaps because looking at something and not being able to see it is not always the cause of accidents that it's made out to be).

Secondly, people already don't crash into the many low bikes on the road and that hasn't made any impression on the idea that they are death traps, because "common sense" != reality.

However yes, I do want one!

    "It's battery assisted"

How are they going to sort the scrutineering for that in the British Pedal Car Grand Prix?

Think someone has their wires crossed...

"PEDAL CAR TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS for 2010

    Basic Characteristics

The cars shall be single seaters, driven solely by leg* power."

(* Disabled entries: We will consider alternative to leg power, please contact us.)

    and, curiously -

"All teams, both senior and junior, must have a responsible adult as ‘Pusher’."

** Though I expect they weren't thinking of batteries, more like arm power -
