Oh aye, a veritable side-splitter of a ride. Last one to the top is a stinker!

I assume one has to be a member of a Proper Cycling Club to enter? (Anyway I have a suspicion I'm doing something else on the 14th...)

@fimm no you can ride any event as "unattached". If you don't have a britich cycling race licence, you will need to buy a day licence for liability insurance purposes. Organiser will publish full details but normally it's a few quid extra on top of the entry fee and just involves giving your name, address and d.o.b on the sign-in sheet.

Plus the West lothian Clarion guys are a good bunch (already had a message from Matt Ball about it after posting on FB) and the Adventure Show are going to be there, so there's always the chance of gettign yer mug on telly.

Alternatively you could register yourself with BC as a cycling club (there are fees) and you could compete under your own club name!
It's all over in about 2-3 minutes of pain...

Presumably Mr. Vipond will be taking on the challenge as he did the Snow Roads audax in June?

4-5 minutes of pain...

The pain doesn't kick in until about 30 seconds in. It continues for some time after you stop though... ;-)
Think I'll give this a go again this year, all being well.

@kaputnik cheers. Just like triathlon.
I must remember what it was I was supposed to be doing that day....
Do you get a run at it, or do you have to start from a dead stop at the bottom? I assume the latter...
Posted 12 years ago # -
@fimm It's a standing start, so the first thing to get comfortable with is being clipped in while someone holds you upright...
Posted 12 years ago # -
Who said I was intending to do this?

If it's the same route as previously, there's a very slight downhill from a standing start before the gradient really cranks up. It wouldn't be so bad if it was just constant, as you could find a good gear and sit in it until your legs begin to give and you can drop down to the next. Alas the gradient increases and decreases and there is even a little dip at one point, which completely throws any semblance of rhythym and requires you to jump back and forward between gears and can catch you out if you're standing up and suddenly find yourself spinning in thin air when it momentarily flattens!

May have to pop out one day to have a look. Maybe strap the bike to the car (cop out from riding there, but also due to time pressures with holiday coming up) and head there early early one morning at the weekend and give it a try.
It might even be in my 'Hillclimbs of Lowland Scotland' book for me to tick off (only ticked Arthur's Seat off so far).

I have ridden up it, but I took a good run at it from the top of the other hill.
Hmmm. I don't seem to be doing anything that day. Its most unfortunate...

@WC If you value your knees, I'd recommend doing at least a wee bit of a warm up before cycling up Kingscavil.

WC: "It might even be in my 'Hillclimbs of Lowland Scotland' book for me to tick off (only ticked Arthur's Seat off so far)"
If you mean "Hillclimbs on Scottish Lowland Roads" Kingscavil isn't listed. I can't believe you've only done Arthur's Seat.

@PS I was (just) joking. ;)
@Tom Only done that one since getting the book, but to be honest not really cycled up many of them anyway. Plans to work through that book.
