On Saturday 22nd September between 11:45am and 4pm Lothian Buses will open its doors to the public at their Central Depot, 55 Annandale Street, Edinburgh. Entrance is free and it is anticipated 2-3K people will go along. This is part of the Cockburn Association’s Doors Open Day. You can see more information at http://www.lothianbuses.co.uk

Lothian and Borders Police will have a couple of Road Safety Awareness stands at the event

At one of the demonstrations PC Bruce Burt and Paul Baker will be encouraging members of the public to sit in the driver’s seat of a bus (stationary) to raise awareness of visibility issues. We are looking for experienced cyclists willing to pass on their expertise to others in the cycling community. Are you able to work with us and offer your time (30 minute slots) and bike to cycle up either side of the bus allowing the public to appreciate what the bus drivers can and cannot see with their mirrors.

If you are able to help Bruce and Paul fill the following slots we would really appreciate your contribution. The slots will be as follows and if you are feeling very keen you can offer to do more than one.

    11:45-12-30 (Slot 1)

    12:30-13:00 (Slot 2)

    13:00-13:30 (Slot 3)

    13:30-14:00 (Slot 4)

    14:30-15:00 (Slot 5)

    15:00-15:30 (Slot 6)

    15:30-16:00 (Slot 7)

If you are able to help out just reply on this thread which slot/s you want. This will let others see what still needs filled.

Any questions feel free to contact Bruce at the West End Police Station on 0131 221 2045 or bruce.burt@lbp.pnn.police.uk

I'm out of town on a long weekend, sorry!

Otherwise would love to help. Found being in the seat this way quite interesting on Lothian Rd.

There must be a few upstanding citizens who can help out?

  3. Oh I would have LOVED to get involved in this, but I'll be on a boat to France... :( (actually, I don't really mean that sad face cos I'll be heading to France, on hols, but I'm sure you get the gist...)

I can help. I work in St Andrew Sq and could do about an hour roughly over lunch time. I'll contact Bruce by the mean given above also.

    Dave C

EDIT - just spotted its a Saturday, I should be ok for a longer period! I'll check with 'der management' ;-)

Pencil me in. I don't believe I have anything on that day, so like Kappers I can do a couple of sessions without fuss.

I'm guessing that Bruce was at the folder coffee meet at Zazou?

I work beside Quentin at the West End Police Station and have just taken over the work he has been doing in relation to cycle safety. Thanks very much for the various offers of help. It’s really appreciated and will help me enormously at the event.

Me and Paul Baker (my counterpart in the Road Policing Branch) will use this username to post messages in the forum.

I am a keen cyclist myself and cycle daily to and from work. Like Quentin I am lucky enough to be one of the forces increasing number of cycle trained officers.

Uberuce, yes it was me at Zazous the other week with Quentin.

DaveC I don’t know why the email address failed. I have just tried it myself, and it worked. If anyone else has a problem I am sure you will let me know.

Kaputnik, DaveC and Uberuce are you able to organise between yourselves using this thread what would be the best slots for you to take. It will let me identify what slots I need to find additional help with. I will make sure I get the tea/coffee and biscuits organised for the 22nd so you don’t go hungry.

I'm also called Bruce, Bruce, but I'm not Bruce that posts here as Bruce. Welcome to the forum!

DaveC'n'Kappers: We could either do an hour each, or interlink half-hour sessions like this:

    1 Dave
    2 Andy
    3 Dave
    4 Andy
    5 Bruce
    6 Hypothetical Third Volunteer
    7 Bruce

Either way we'd need a third body or one of us to do that last one.

I think I might be able to come along, due to kids and an inability to commit it might be easier if Uberuce just allocates me timeslot(s) to force a commit :)

    1) so "Cycle PC" is not one person, but 2 - 3 people using that account? (I have no problem with this but would like to be clear because at the moment I'm confused).

    2) does anyone else have vague recollection of a (Monty Python?) sketch about Australian philosophers called Bruce?

Maybe we could get Bruce (chdot) to just update everyones user name to keep things simple.

    1) I think Cycle PC was one person - now two.

I'm sure poster(s) will sign to avoid confusion.

    2) Yes

"Maybe we could get Bruce (chdot) to just update everyones user name to keep things simple."

    CCE isn't about simple...

Some people (at least four) have changed their user names. This is for individual, personal, reasons and has caused some confusion.

I wouldn't encourage this, but I'm not going to stop it.

It's actually more confusing when people just use initials and some people have assumed it's someone else!

I could probably pop along for a bit if another volunteer is required.

I'd prefer an hour slot or longer if possible? I thought we could run at the same time as I'm sure they'll be more than one visitor at a time? I've been given the thumbs up at home but I don't think I'll be allowed to stay the whole day as I have young children and she ned help on a weekend.

(Uber)Bruce, I hope we can find a third live person to help (Morningsider) rather than a third body as I understand SOCO may not be planning on attending ;-)

    Hi,

Paul here. Bruce and I agreed between ourselves that he (Bruce) would sign off any entries with his name, to sav confusion. I (Paul) will still be the main Cycle PC, with Bruce contributing as he sees fit.

If it would be easier, we can certainly create separate profiles.

    Paul.

As the person who asked the question in the first place, I actually quite like the idea of "CyclePC" being a user who may be more than one person, posting in their official capacity. I just wanted to check that that was what was happening!

I can't speak for Kaputnik, but it sounds like he's as easily redistributed as me; if so I declare the ball to be in the mutual courts of Morningsider and DaveC to work out where their 90 minutes should lie, and Kappers and I will handle the other 120 between us.

For Bruce/Paul's purposes: yep, we got this.

Very sorry chaps, but I'm going to have to pull out of this. Mrs M had, unknown to me, arranged to go through to Glasgow for a 40th birthday party while this is on. This means I will have the kids. Hopefully someone else can cover for me - apologies again.

Oh, forgot. I guess it'd be:

    1 Bruce
    2 Bruce
    3 Andy
    4 Andy
    5 Dave
    6 Dave
    7 nearafare

Kappers and I are interchangeable, perhaps?

Thanks very much for getting yourself organised so well.

I will be keeping to my promise so heading out to the shops to get some biscuits for tomorrow. Myself and Paul look forward to seeing you all at the bus depot in Annandale Street. Thanks again for you help.

Indeedy: I'll be on 11.45-1, hand over to Kappers, there's a 30 minute break, then Dave steps up until 3.30 and hands over(I hope) to nearafare.

*pokes nearafare with a stiff fish* Still available?

@DaveC: unless there's a typo, then there's a 30 min interval, so you aren't on site until 2.30. Hope that it's not a typo, really.

The question is, what to wear? Official toeing the line would be hi-viz and helm, brickie vest and all my lights, on during daylight, riding a stock upright, but for worst-case purposes maybe I'd be better taking the brakes off wee blue floofy for the day and going hipster, or taking the trailer and being non-standard.

Then again, you can't go wrong with the LBD.

I might struggle to get there for bang on 3:30, my good lady exepcts to be back 3ish and its 30 mins for me to gt there, figure out where I'm going etc, I take it we wheel our mounts in, look out for LBD, and off we go ?
