Hot on the heels of today’s cycling event in the city, the council has announced that it will spend £1.4m on improving cycling in the capital.

Initiatives to make Edinburgh a better city for ‘active travel’ will be considered by councillors next week, with an outline of how the council’s transport budget is to be spent on cycling.

An extra dedicated cycling officer will also be appointed to take forward the design and construction of schemes that are already in the pipeline.

A further £460,000 will be spent on routine maintenance of cycle routes and on marketing and promotion. This year the Council has also attracted £425,000 of matching funding for cycle projects from The Scottish Government via Sustrans.

Does the council convene on Saturdays? Mon - Fri 0900-1700 surely? Also they are clairvoyant and have predicted what has happened already on 13th September. Now I know why they were elected. Did they have an extraordinary meeting post Sky event because they must have been working very late!

Having read it, this is a report/motion that will be presented for approval at committee on 13 September. Presumably it has been prepared beforehand.

Indeed, Adobe Reader reports the PDF was created on 5/9/2012 at 11:29:43; last modified 6/9/2012 at 09:58:44.

This is a report to committee.

Normal practice is that it is made public (on CEC website) a week before meeting.

Edinburgh Reporter has done a story. It will be interesting to see how ENews plays it.

There is some good stuff in there. Extra staff is particularly important. The extra emphasis on walking is good. There is even reverence to segregated infrastructure.

It's fairly safe to say that this is about to become council policy - and reaffirms the +1% extra p.a. spending.

Several steps forward, but a long way to go.

There is even reverence to segregated infrastructure.

Not sure I'd put it that strongly! ;-)

Also refers to "pressure" for segregated lanes. However no action proposed, just to "note" the pressure.

Presume that will be left to the "Sir Chris Hoy Way" meeting to sort out? Not happening this year by the looks of it.

Anyway overall generally positive. No big surprises for anyone who has been campaigning on this front, but good to see implementation being carried forward and that CEC is listening to Spokes, CTC and, yes, even CCE...

All right all right, I meant reference.

    "even CCE"

    Perhaps especially...

CCE is not an 'organisation' in the normally accepted sense, but it's been interesting the way themes and ideas and attitudes have developed over the past three years among people who perhaps didn't/don't see themselves as 'activists' or 'campaigners' - or even 'cyclists'.

Just normal people - Edinburgh residents or workers.
