Ok, so as discussed in a previous thread, I currently have as an audax/road bike an old Giant OCR which has been upgraded with nice wheels, groupset etc etc. Unfortunately with a straight bladed steel fork it’s more than a little harsh over rubbish road surfaces and I suspect the frame is getting a bit long in the tooth as well.
My first idea, as discussed, was to replace the frame with a nice steel one, however after much soul-searching, I just can’t justify the spend just now :-( Also after the three glens I’m thinking the speed and hill-climbing advantage of a nice light frame could be good to keep! :-o

My fall back plan was to pick up a used Giant OCR/TCR (as I know their small size fits me), and then with a bit of luck the carbon forks will add that little bit of slight comfort (and less weight as a bonus. I can’t fit carbon forks to my current frame as it is the very old very base model with the skinny head tube).

Having had a look around, most of the OCR/TCR frames on ebay are going for more than the price of a new alloy road frame from Planet X or Ribble, so… given the choice of a cheap new frame or an older frame of unknown history… I’m now looking at the Planet X Team Alu Mk2, The Ribble Audax frame or possibly a Pro-Lite frame from CRC’s sale, all between £100 and £200.

Anyone got experience of those? Know about mudguard clearance? I want to switch over a full Shimano 105 groupset and hopefully squeeze on a carradice saddlebag, the Ribble seems to be about a kilo heavier for no obvious advantage, the Planet X is pretty (I know, I know…) and the Pro-lite is an unknown quantity, can’t find much info on them.

    Thoughts…?

I've got a Team Alu and it's very nice, but I wouldn't want to ride brevets on one. You'd have to go for raceblades and that limits you to 23mm tyres IIRC (I did once manage to get raceblades onto a 25mm GP4000s but there was zero clearance).

Also it's pretty stiff (stiffer than my old Pearson anyway, I don't have a huge amount of DF racing frame experience). However, you'd be more than welcome to come and poke at it if you like.

Hmmm tempting Dave, thanks, I have 23c tyres anyway (Schwalbe Durano) so no hardship to be limited to them, I can always use the Surly if I need comfort above speed :-)

Cool. If the forecast's good (strictly a sunshine bike) I could potentially commute on it one day and we could meet up - alternatively you'd be welcome to come round and have a shot down by King's Buildings?

I have a small Giant OCR 0 frame which you could have for not too many £s. Don't know the 'market' value of it, I would just rather see it used. It is a ...hmm 2005/6ish..., not got many miles on it as I took a 3 year hiatus around that time, then bought the Cervelo when I started again.

Edit. Oh, and as mentioned in a previous thread, I've also got a a bag full of Ultegra components (full group set) which came off the Giant, but was hammered for 2 years on the Cervelo, some of which may be usable.

Oooh that could fit the bill Baldcyclist, you will have a pm shortly.
Dave, thank you for the kind offer, I trust you will understand if I don't take it up until I discuss with BC ;-)
