On our local 100 a mate got a blowout which tore through the sidewall of his tyre which we managed to fix with three small tiewraps and a disconnection of his front brakes. I have a couple of spare folding tires and I think I'll add one to my Audax Caradice lis Bluethorn guy, do you carry a tube section of toothpaste or just a rectangular patch!

As I have discovered, a bit of old tyre sidewall makes an excellent patch for tyre sidewalls. Just cut a few rectangles of different sizes from an old tyre whose tread is worn (as long as the sidewall is not cracked). You can fix to the inside of the tyre if there's a cut/hole in the sidewall. Good to keep some gaffer tape in the bag, wrapped around a bit of plastic tube (eg. an old biro barrel cut in half would do). The tape can be used on its own for small cuts, or to hold a patch in place.

    I have an issue.
I think I will need lights for both the Forth and Tay and the Snow Roads. Rear light not a problem.
However for the 3 Glens I had my handlebar bag which was very useful, but I don't think my handlebar mounted front light is compatible with the bar bag.
I've seen some very long kit/spares lists for Audax which is getting me a bit paranoid. I guess the thing to do is put stuff into my little Carradice...
I should probably just put the bar bag on and go out in the dark!

@Fimm, if I can get out of my bed in time you can have a shufti/shot at my hub dynamo/led light setup.
In fact if you're heading along Lanark Rd in the morning I could probably chum you into py!

Insulating tape wrapped round the inner tube can survive a fairly big hole in the sidewall (MTB Pro tip a few years ago - it works!)

    Cheers Smudge.
I'm only on the Lanark Road if I'm doing my long commute, which I won't be tomorrow. But you've given me a reason to go to PY...

@fimm, I have the lights issue too. I've not fitted a sidewall dynamo to the 'new' Dawes so I'll be taking battery lights: specifically a Cree front light (good for 3 hours on full charge), plus a lower power LED front torch thingy as a backup. Standard red LED on the back, saddlebag light loop. I am eschewing a bar bag and using a Carradice Nelson instead.

I'm going to fix a Minoura spacesaver bar extension to my bars so I can fit two lights on the front.

@fimm. I have one of these and when I borrowed a handlebar bag I just mounted this vertically and popped the light on it:

Well if I'm an incentive I'll have to make a special effort to be there ;-)

@DaveC that's an interesting bit of kit... my boyfriend has very oversized handlebars on his road bike which it is difficult to mount a light on (though we did manage to get a cateye on there last night in a hurry...) If that truely does "oversize" it might be useful/justifiable (as might Smudge's Carradice support thing that I got a look at this morning).

The whole tube and a brush - one never knows when one may need to flash an engaging smile at an errant motorist!

Duct tape carried round the pump, why carry all the weight of a biro :-)

Latest news from the organiser of the Port Navigation:

"Over 30 entries, looks like its going to be a decent turnout.  I will have to contact CalMac to brief them on numbers so prompt entries appreciated.

I'll most likely be doing the organisers ride a day or so before the calendar event, so any update to the routesheet or whatever will just be a verbal update on the day of the event.

There are rumours that The Islander may be heading over for this.."

An "unplanned dismount" due to diesel or something similar on the road at the weekend has left me with a very sore and swollen thumb. I took it to the minor injuries clinic at the Western General yesterday evening and x-rays show it isn't broken thankfully.

The nice nurse strapped it up and told me to take ibuprofen for the swelling and so that I keep using it more because it hurts less. I don't currently see it stopping me staring the Forth and Tay next weekend. Just got all the blurb through for that and am starting to feel nervous!

Don't worry - I am sure that you will enjoy it - especially afterwards!

Och you'll be fine hen. Its our mate gavster who we have to worry aboot! He's not been out that much and will be governing a comfortable pace round. You're welcome to join our party again if you like, we're adopted Fifers and know the place like the back of our hands (looks at backs of hands 'eek when did those liver spots appear?')

Just look at it this way, if your speedy you don't get your moneys worth.

Folks doing this weekends audax, please remember not to park in Dalmeny, the train station is just down the road and we'll be passing it on the way out if you've left anything in your car ;O)

Did a 56k training ride this afternoon out to Haddington, in glorious sunshine. Not super fast, but glad I did as it was good to remind my body about quicker than normal cycling (for me).

Looking forward to Sunday, though the forecast is rain. :-(

Forecast keeps changing, but Sunday now predicted to be not so wet, but a fair bit colder...

@DaveC that's extremely kind of you. Part of me thinks I would like to do my own thing at my own speed and part of me thinks that taking up the offer of company would be sensible! I don't want to be a nuisance/hold people up etc etc.

Hmm. Current forecast for Sunday is light rain, temperature 2/3 degrees celsius, 18/19mph easterly wind. Wind chill makes it feel like around -4/-6 degrees celsius?

So, cold and wet basically. The run from Auchterarder to Tayport should be particularly 'fun' with a headwind and lashing cold rain.

    Waterproofs and wooly socks then!

More of a "be prepared" type. Forecast may change again of course, but in the meantime I'm checking that I know where my cold weather/wet weather cycling gear is...

Got an email from the F&T organiser saying "it may be so windy that the bridge will be closed to cyclists, so here's an alternative route".
    Nice.
Continuous rain seems less likely at the moment, but a strong, cold, easterly wind is on the cards...

Suppose at least we'll be blown back to Dalmeny from St Andrews.

I've been a complete lazy scumbag and barely been out this year. Hopefully today's ovine purchase of a Carradice will inspire me to brave the weather tomorrow and have at least a wee look at East Lothian or somesuch.
