I'm back!! well tbh I never left... I got to the north side of the bridge and what with the others binning it, and a strange crunching noise from my BB, I decided to head home and text Martin (cyclops on cce) that I'd be a DNF.

Took my bike to the local bike mech to find out that my BB was full of a grinding paste made up of dirt and grit which has put paid to my BB, after only ~1.5 months. I've gone for a Stronglight set to replace it for a cheap as chips ~£102:- BB + Triple chainset and Tiagra Front derailiur.

I take my hat off to DrAfternoon (and buff, snood, gloves and scarf) after that mamoth Audax. You must be made of sterner stuff than I, or just be Balmy/Bonkers!

Fimm, I'd be up for a DIY but if you are a member of Audax (and you should be ;-) we could do this ride again in nicer weather, I'm sure Martin would be happy to get rid of soe of those 80 validation stickers!! If one of us does it as a DIY we technically can't have other along as thats regarded as cheating, but we can ride with others on the DIY. I don't fancy the Dave Harris, but am down for the Port Navigation in a month.

I spent the day building snowmen and just trying to get rid of some awful tooth ache. Went to the dentist this morning (on spec) and was sorted by my dentist with my root drilled and nerve removed and a clove inserted. I have another appointment for next Monday to put a new filling in. Martin came in handy as I was able to ask him about my vast tooth ache Sunday afternoon - he's a dentist you know.

As previously hinted, maybe a respectful gap to allow the organiser to sort out any residual issues, process the few brevets of those who finished the ride, and so on. Then we can maybe approach him to see if he's up for making the route a permanent ride. If so, I may be wrong but I don't think there are any regs saying riders can't enter a perm to ride on the same date?

I'm sorry I couldn't have arranged slightly better weather for Sunday, when I rode it the week before it was a lovely day.

Feel free to ride either of the routes I sent you. I'd suggest using South Queensferry Tesco or the Shell garage as a control instead of Dalmeny. I'm not making any new perm rides so you'll need to do it as a DIY through Alex Pattison.

I'm working very hard on reducing the muffin mountain in my kitchen.

Cheers Cyclops! Well I reckon that's May's DIY 200 route sorted out for me then. ;-)

    Think I asked before

    Difference between perm and DIY

I'm sure I could look it up

    Link anyone?

I think a Perm is a prerouted course you follow which has been checked and authorised by the regional rides sec, in this case Alex. They are usually a pre run audax ride which has been made perminant. Its creator will have pre printed brevit cards which you buy from the creator. A DIY is a route you create yourself and have authorised by Alex before you start the ride, usualy upto a day before, though its good to submit it a week or so before incase its refused because it either isn't long enough, i.e. 199km instead of 200+km or doesn't have enough check points. The rider in this case has to buy blank brevit cards and fill them in themselves. In both cases the rider must submit either a gpx of the ride or receipts to prove the rider stopped at the controls. I think the DIY goes to Alex (here in Scotland) or the Perm creator in the case of the Perminant.

    Difference between perm and DIY

A perm is a route that an organiser has made up. When you enter you'll normally get a routesheet and other info.

A DIY is a route you make up yourself. You need to plan the controls and get it approved before you ride it. You need to do all the route finding yourself.

There is a bit of a blurring in the distinction between the two when you're using a route that's been used before in a calendar event.

Enjoy the muffin mountain, cyclops... and thank you for all your hard work organising.

I think my broken bike saved me from being out till 9:30pm with DrAfternoon...

I just want to do a 200km training ride before the Snow Roads, which caught my imagination and became something I "have" to do. I'm already a member of a mountianeering club, a triathlon club, and triathlonscotland so am disinclined to join any more organisations, however excellent they may be.

@fimm, nothing stopping you from riding that route any time. You just won't get any "points"/recognition (or insurance) if you don't join AUK before you ride.

However if I do it as a DIY in May I would not be able to invite you to ride along with me, due to rules about other riders "pacing" AUK riders on Permanent rides...

"9.9.3 Participants may ride singly or in groups and may pace each other but may not be paced by any other cyclist."

I would be a "participant" whilst alas you as a non-member would be "any other cyclist" as far as AUK is concerned.

Tom was planning a cross-border raid sometime (May?). That should be about 100 miles. Then you would just need to go around Arthur's Seat a few times to get to 200km.

I'm confused, if you ride a permanent must you ride alone? But presumably there are no rules about riding in a group on an organised day?

@steveo, I edited my post above. In a "group perm/group DIY perm" situation pacing is okay, as long as all riders are "participants" ie. entered into the ride. Which means AUK membership is necessary, unlike a calendar event where you can buy a temporary membership for two quid extra.

    Makes sense, mostly.
I presume this is why audax organisers get upset when non participants join their mates around the first corner.

Basically if riding an AUK ride you can't ride with any non-members, so if Fimm was to ride on the same day as Crowriver, she would have to ride behind and use him as a wind break. I can't see what the problem is?? ;o)

@DaveC, the problem would be my speed (or lack of). I'd be lucky to see fimm's heels for dust after the first control! ;-)

Ultimately no-one can stop you riding on public roads, even if it's against AUK regs to join a calendar ride "unofficially". I assume organisers would be concerned about things like the self-sufficiency of riders, liability for possible accidents, freeloaders nabbing cakes and tea at non-commercial controls, etc.

I suspect most organisers would turn a blind eye to non-entrants tagging along on a perm or DIY ride. After all, if you don't tell them (or post pictures on forums where they're members) how are they to know ;) There is a huge amount of trust inherent in perms and DIYs - there are numerous ways of cheating if that's your thing.

However non-entrants on calendar events are likely to get short shrift - your entry fee goes towards paying for a lot more than a card and some food.

cyclops typed "your entry fee goes towards paying for a lot more than a card and some food"

That'll explain all your Rapha gear then ;o)

How are you getting on demolishing those cakes?

@Davec I'm more a Santini/Mavic man although I do confess to owning a very threadbare Rapha cap

Well, if there are forumites interested in riding the Forth & Tay route as a group DIY in May, might I suggest a date(s)?

I was originally going to do a DIY 200 on 13/14 May, which is Monday/Tuesday. These days suit me (especially Tuesdays) because I work part-time, kids are at school/nursery and the roads are usually quiter on a Tuesday (no Sunday day-trippers). Shops/cafes are usually open and trains running a full schedule also. However I'm well aware this won't suit most of the full-timers out there so I'm looking at 12 May as well (Sunday).

If you're up for it, PM me and I'll try to fettle a (slightly) revised list of controls with S. Queensferry as start/finish. If no-one gets in touch, that's fine, I'll do it solo on the Tuesday... ;-)

EDIT: - We could even do the ride in Team CityCycling jerseys (a full rainbow of colours)...

Finishers from the Berwick and Beattock 400 will be finishing at South Queensferry Tesco on the morning of 12th May - maybe you can persuade some of them to tag along for another 200km ;-)

Groan, if I finish the B&B I'll tag along as far as my house in Dalgety Bay....

I've posted off my entrance form for the Dave Harris...

Crowriver, I think your unofficial Forth and Tay will be too close to the Snow Roads for me.

No worries. If there are no other takers, then I'll enter as a solo DIY on the Tuesday.

Hmm. It would appear that 12th May is the date for another organised bike ride. I think it's called the Étape Écosse, or something like that...

Got my Dave Harris Memorial (who was he, does anyone know?) route sheet yesterday. I'd been half hoping that it had got lost in the post so I wouldn't have to do it, the weather forecast is so cold. Anyone else on here doing it?

I've done it the last few years, but this year I decided not to bother with anything that didn't have online entry.

Not that I'm too upset, given my toes still need to defrost after this morning's ride in!
