I should say freinds of ours are helping to organise the fed stations etc at this end and they are keen to get helpers involved. Feel free to offer your help is you have time.

I may have to enter that I think.

I have already offered my services as volunteer for LEL Edinburgh control. The other Scottish controls are a bit far away for me to get to, but those with cars (or who live closer) may want to help at Traquair, Moffat or Eskdalemuir.
Completed the Trossachs 100k permanent yesterday. Lovely day for it: dry, mostly sunny, though quite cold in the morning and still frost evident in Stirlingshire.
Very beautiful run along the Lochs: Lubnaig and Earn. I couldn't help stopping to take snaps with my phone occasionally. The road along the south side of Loch Earn is perfect for cycling: the only motor vehicles I met there were parked alongside caravans or fishing spots.
The same could not be said of the A84 by Loch Lubnaig: busy, a fair few large HGVs and some aggressive, reckless overtaking behaviour going on. I don't wish to perpetuate stereotypes but male drivers of BMWs, Audis and Land Rovers seem to be amongst the most dangerous drivers. Clearly frustrated by queues of traffic on the winding, bendy bits they executed some frightening manoeuvres whenever a straight bit came up. Speed camera signs and police warning notices did not have much effect.
A pity the Sustrans route along the other side of Loch Lubnaig is not better suited to anything other than leisure pootling and trail riding. I would have preferred to avoid the A84 if possible.
All in all though, a grand day out. Good takeaway tea at the Lochearnhead village shop too: very welcome to have a hot drink after being shaded from the sun most of the way up from Callander.
After this positive experience I shall certainly be tackling more permanent audax rides: quite a different feel from the calendar events, as the only 'racing' is against your own time targets. Great fun though: really just a bike ride with time limits and a little extra admin.

I wouldn't recomend the Snow Roads 300 Perm today. This was taken on the Lecht yesterday:

Lovely weather in mull......for now.

crowriver, we were at my mother in laws at Bridge of Allan yesterday, and I sympathised with anyone doing the 100k - so chapeau to you - it was very cold first thing, frosty in the village, so suspect you hit a fair bit out and about.
It was a lovely day though, very sunny - and it could have been a lot worse - i.e. todays weather !!
Too cold for me though, I would have holed up in a coffee shop and called the broom wagon !

@Nelly, must admit it was rather chilly until about 2pm or so. No frost on the roads, but plenty on the grass alongside. My nose was running quite a lot in the morning due to the cold air: ah, the glamour of Audax...
The lady in the Lochearnhead village shop said she put the kettle on as soon as she saw me pull up outside!
As you say, it could have been much worse. I'd rather have cold but dry and sunny (with very little noticeable wind) than cold and wet and windy.

Oops posted in Last year/seasons thread.
I rode the New Season Brevet on Saturday. 8am left Gala, 10.10 @ Eskdalemuir (Sayme Ling)) 11.30 langholm for 1/2 hr lunch. Then 1pm arrived at Gretna - drink plus chocy, 2.15 back at Langholm. ~3.30 at Samye Ling for a bru & cake. Back at Gala for 6.20 ish. 128 miles or 207 km. 8.16 moving time. Still too much time sat around drinking tea etc... The weather was still in the marning with fog in the glans leaving Gala. Slight rain after Selkirk but only for 20 mins. Then dry and by lunch the sun was threatening. On the rtn leg the sun was out and wind strengthening but from the west so not too bad. Dark as we arrived back at the car and appart from the heal of my left hand hurting a wee bit I felt well enough to go for another 100km.
I'm a bit dissapointed with the last leg. It took around 2.10 to cycle the first 57km but around 3?? back? I'm going to have to check my receipts. Saymie Ling to Langholm was nearly all down hill but appears to have taken the same both ways?!?! Nah I need to check the times.Posted 12 years ago # -
Just getting ready to do a DIY 100k around the Forth. Last opportunity for me nefore the clocks go back. Weather could be better! Should have done it on Sunday just gone...

Well that was a blast. I called my DIY the Round The Forth Rumble. Started from an ATM near my home, controls at Limekilns, Clackmannan, Bo'ness and Beecraigs Visitor Centre.
Riding in mist until the Forth Bridge, then a mild headwind kicked in which was only an issue again on parts of the return leg. Popped in for a cuppa with my mum in Charlestown, then off along the West Fife Cycle Way, which was covered in such a deep carpet of leaves at points that it was impossible to see the edges of the path. Luckily it was almost deserted so I just stayed bang in the middle. Had a mechanical problem with front left canti boss rattling loose about 40km in: so that's why my bottle dynamo had been slipping. Luckily an allen key sorted it out, but with that and a cuppa plus chat I was chasing the time limit for the next half of the ride.
Clackmannanshire bridge is interesting. Apart from the utterly stupid chicanes at either end, the path across is really good: wide and smooth. Something tells me the bridge was not designed with this path in mind, as one lane of traffic northbound has been removed: southbound there are are two lanes. I wonder if we'll see something similar happening on the second Forth crossing if the FB becomes unusable? Also, despite the Clacks bridge raison d'etre being to bypass Kincardine, there seemed to be no shorrtage of HGVs etc using the old KIncardine bridge. Proves the old equation about increased road capacity generating more traffic. I think "we" will have to make sure the Scot Gov sticks to its pledge to make the old Forth bridge public transport and active travel only...
Beecraigs. Oh, that hill. Just after the Col du Bo'ness too. I knew what I was letting myself in for (after all I designed the route) but no matter how many times I climb it, it still seems steeper than I recall. Maybe I'll do the ride clockwise next time...
I wasn't going up there without getting some venison, so crammed a pack of very well frozen sausages into the saddle bag. Ihad 'snow' on the inside flap of the bag when I got home.Fial stretch saw me playing salmon to all the north bound cycle commuters on the NEP in the fog. Just as well I sorted that canti boss mount...

Alas, I am having to pull out of the Guy Fawkes audax on physio advice. I will now be plotting for 2013 to compensate.
Posted 12 years ago # -
So just Recombodna doing the Guy Fawkes then? I'm toying with the idea of entering. I'll see what SWMBO says but I'll need the car if I do it, unless anyone could offer a lift? Problem is I'm out in Darkest Fife.
Posted 12 years ago # -
DaveC, do you know if transfer of entries is allowed? If so you are welcome to mine.
Posted 12 years ago # -
Ah, but then DaveC might not be able to claim towards his SR award...
Posted 12 years ago # -
I'll just drop Lucy an email. Shall I just sub your entry for mine and give you the entry fee when I see you next?
Posted 12 years ago # -
If she'll swap, don't worry about the fee. I am not able to do it anyway. But I'll want to see pics!
Posted 12 years ago # -
ok, pm me your email address and I'll drop Lucy and email and CC you.
Posted 12 years ago # -
Cool cheers Amir, I've emailed you and Lucy,
Murry if you want to ride with me, I'll be fine with this. Let me know if you are coming and I'll look out for you. The start point is the car park at Livingstone Road, in Gala. Street view will show it easily.
Posted 12 years ago # -
DaveC Yes I'm going. My "pals" have bailed on me so going it alone. Be great to hook up with you if you're there. I'll pm you my mobile number. Could also give you a lift if you could get into edinburgh or thereabouts.
Posted 12 years ago # -
If that lift is blue and has natty curtains then would there also be space for little old me and a Croix?
Posted 12 years ago # -
Why of course duder.Always room for uberuce
Posted 12 years ago # -
You're doing the Audax on a Croix???!!! Have you got road tyres on? jeepers.
Murry, thanks but I'll be driving down myself now. a mate locally wants a lift and I said I'll give him a lift. Many thanks, see you at the start. I'll be a nice group of 5 of us at this rate.

You guys are making me jealous!
Posted 12 years ago # -
shweet.... I'll just tuck in behind
Posted 12 years ago # -
Dave, you've been there when I did a 190k run on a flat bar singlespeed carrying half of Belgium in a big army surplus ammo bag. By comparison there can be no tyres within the wit of humankind to manufacture which can make a minimally packed Croix a poorer choice.
It's got 25mm Conti Gatorskins, if that helps.
Posted 12 years ago # -
Never underestimate the uberuce machine.......
Posted 12 years ago # -
I'm too late to enter now and the organiser is refusing to allow an entry to be transfered. I've emailed to see if I can still enter. Just up to her now.
