I looked at the Audax site but the Guy Fawkes is not a permanent (such that I can find).

Oh, bumsy. I didn't get around to emailing her in the first instance.

@DaveC, no but there are others. Martin Foley has three 200k perms that run around in the Borders, including the Saltire. Or there's Graeme Wylie's west coast Fort or Port navigations; Or Mark Shannon's Solway & Clyde 200. Or do a DIY...
Great thing about permanents is you can ride them when you want. Maybe you and Uberuce could team up to do one together?

Bruce, If we fail to get on the Audax and want a 200 I know a nice local Fife route which we can start from Inverkeithing - so you could get a train to the start. Inverkeithing, Kirkaldy, Glenrothes, Guardsbridge, Newport on Tay, Bridge of Earn , Auchterarder, Yetts oh Muchart, Kincardine, Linlithgow, South Queensferry, Inverkeithing. We'd need a few days to organise the Audax - for the points but it may be an alternative if the organiser refused late entry.

That combines both my itch to get past that 200 kilometre milestone and to see more of Fife by bike, so yeppers, I'm keen for that.
Just need to get some mudguards slapped onto the Croix. Did just shy of 80 miles on it yesterday's rain and I confess to getting a bit fed up of the spray.

The route looks like:
Dalgety Bay Rail Station [Control]
Kirkcaldy
Thornton
Star
Ceres
St Andrews [Control]
Tayport
Newport on Tay [Control]
Bridge of Earn
Auchterarder [Control]
Yetts oh Muchart
Dollar
Clackmannan [Control]
Dunfermline
Dalgety Bay [Control]Posted 12 years ago # -
I got the info back on the guy fawkes. It's a basic DIY event where the controls are mostly shops / ATMs I can't see any reason why they wouldn't let you do it if you emailed them and explained yourselves.....

I'll see what the organiser says. If its a DIY then perhaps they want the least faff and having pay only by PayPal and closing to new entrants a week before, may be their preferred choice.

I could do the Guy Fawkes ride but would not get the points for it in Audax. Its a long way down to Gala for the same as a ride I could do from home. So this is preferable to me.

I hope they do let you in. I can't imagine it's oversubscribed at this time of year. Anyway, I'm still in for the Guy Fawkes, so can help carry the flag for CCE.
Had a good training ride over the Moorfoots this morning. Much nicer than the murderous climbs on the Lammermuirs!

"so can help carry the flag for CCE"
Oh we've got a flag now, that's good...
Posted 12 years ago # -
Hope to see you there DrAfternoon
Talking of flags one for the old punks among us...

Three cyclists rampant above a tram dormant on a field vert?

Bruce, Update: Not sure if I want to ride ths on my own so if your defo coming then let me know as I'll be booking it as an Audax on the Thursday evening. Of course everyone else is welcome.
Dalgety Bay - St Andrews - Newport on Tay - Newburgh - Creiff - Auchterarder - Dalgety Bay.

Go go go! *makes hand choppy motions*
Do I need to book my bike onto the train?
Posted 12 years ago # -
Davec and uberuce part of me thinks I'd be better off coming with you guys...... Give me one reason why I should go to gala to ride 200k on my own???
Posted 12 years ago # -
Because you can't take your van on the train?
Posted 12 years ago # -
You could take Bruce in the van with his bike? to Fife, not Gala. To be fair the ride we did from Gala was lovely on quiet roads (apart from the A7 in parts) which you will be avoiding. The buddest retreat is fab and the 5 miles of free wheeling on the way back makes up for the 5 miles of up hill on the way out.
Seriously you are both welcome to ride with me at the weekend. Just let me know. I'm still verifying the route but it may go Dalgety Bay - Crail (along the coast) - St Andrews - Newport on Tay (lunch) - Newburgh - Auchterarder - Glen Devon - Dalgety Bay.

Bruce at that time in the morning you won't need a reservation for your bike on the train. No harm in trying though? I never have.

"Because you can't take your van on the train?"........ Oh yeah??? watch me!!
Or maybe not prolly end up gong to gala....

Got an image of a flustered train person at Haymarket with RDNA trying to get on.
"Yes, I know I said it was okay on the phone. I'm a cyclist myself, so when you said 'take my van on' I thought you meant a Van Nicols."
I reckon it will be bike-empty, Dave, but I'll probably phone a booking in just case of jobsworths. Suggest a time?

No booking required/possible on 'local' trains.

If it's an early train you may find commuters' bikes going to Kirkcaldy, St Andrews, Dundee, etc. On the weekend sometimes sport or leisure cyclists in evidence instead, even cyclotourists in summer.
However very rarely are the bike racks on the trains full: only happened twice to me in over 3 years of mixed mode commuting. Still I take the folder just in case...

Hi Bruce,
Outward times
Depart EDB Waverley 07:10, 07:39
Arrive DAG 07:35 08:05Buy a return as its cheeper than two singles. If you wanted to get the later train you are welcome. Alternatively you could get a train to Inverkeithing and cycle to Dalgety Bay, its about a mile and a half.
Outward times
Depart EDB Waverley 07:18, 07:34, 07:39
Arrive INV 07:41 07:53, 08.01http://www.cyclestreets.net/journey/5927963/
If tyou want to get there for the 08:05 train I'm sure it will be fine, as we have plenty of time and with only 2 of us there will be no faffage time to add in.
Posted 12 years ago # -
*Blushes* I just meant suggest a time for me to arrive at yours, but thank you for looking up the times.
I'll get the DAG 7.35 arrival, methinks.

For the Three Glens Explorer, drAfternoon, crowriver and I all got the earlier of two possible trains (and there was still plenty of space). I think the later train only had one audaxer on it... still at least we had plenty of time to eat cake...
Posted 12 years ago # -
Oh there will be plenty of time to eat cake.
Aye get that train Bruce. I'll pm you my address, though we'll be cycling back to the Station to get a receipt for the start control. I'm only a 5 min cycle to my house. I'll give you directions too.
