@Smudge, yes it's a bit nostalgic doing the whole paper, stamps and envelopes thing. I haven't received a route sheet (yet), there's no current route online (latest I've seen is 2007). However the controls are listed on the web site (except the info control) so one can always use Googol maps and plot a route out.

Also, shhh, hush hush, I noticed a discussion about this on the Musselburgh RCC web site. So the official route waypoints are: Musselburgh – Pencaitland – Gifford – Redstane Rigg – Dunbar – Haddington – Port Seaton – Musselburgh.

I've found the difficult bit is finding the "right" way out of Dunbar and then chosing the "right" lanes between Stenton and Haddington. But there will be lots of others to follow.

@amir, aye DaveC and I got a bit flommoxed by that last year. Just as well it wasn't an audax that time.

But there will be lots of others to follow.

Depends where you are in the field. I think on the popular audax runs the mass of riders is shaped like a tadpole or comet. A few 'super riders' at the very front; followed by a larger peloton of quite fast club rider types/seasoned audaxers forming the 'head'; then a long 'tail' of moderate to slower riders, thinning out by relative speed into small bunches of riders or solo loners, gradually petering out until 'les lanternes rouges' bring up the rear.

I'm usually somewhere about 2/3 down the field, quite often there are not so many riders to follow there...

The first time I rode it we went through Gifford twice, once out, once back. And that was with the East of Scotland Road Race champion leading the way. So don't feel too bad if you get mixed up.

I'm doing ToEL. Looking forwarded it. I presume it's the same route as usual. Assuming Redstane Rigg is passable. Think I read elsewhere that 170 entries in so far- so that's a fair bit up on recent years.

I'm giving it a miss this year, we're probably doing a local 100 instead.

On last years effort I accompanied Chris round and we kept being caught by some Weegie. I isnisted he didn't let us slow him down, and that he could continue on without us, but he steadfastly refused. I eventually figured out he was tail end charlie ensuring no one was left behind. :(

Can any Audax experts confirm that the route is just advisory? Can you take any route as long as you visit the controls and find the answer to the secret question?

If it's an Audax, you can take any route so long as you visit the controls within the prescribed time windows and can answer the information controls.

"Can any Audax experts confirm that the route is just advisory?"

The route is indeed advisory for UK events. As long as you visit the controls in the right order within the time limits it's fine. The route is meant to be designed so you can't ride under distance however I once worked out it's possible to visit all the controls on the ToEL and only ride 70km or so. For instance, the shortest route from Musselburgh to the first control on Redstane Rigg is definitely not via Cousland.

DaveC - ha! No, Amir I just thought that there are easier routes between Haddington and Musselburgh.

Tom, I think there is an info control near the Ballencrief roundabout, making it difficult to avoid the Yak

You could take a cx bike and take the railway path from Haddington to Longniddry.

Cyclops. I'm guessing you would turn back at the top of Redstone and reach Garvald via Carfrae. Though with a CX bike there must be loads of other routes available.

I think a fair few people take the A199 from Dunbar to Haddington especially those treating it as the unofficial first road race of the season. The only short cut I've taken is down Bangly Brae to avoid the Ballencrief to Longniddry road which I'm not too keen on.

Route sheet arrived in the post this morning. I will scrutinise it in detail when I have a chance. I did note however emblazoned on the sheet "It is the middle of February, we will be riding on country roads and light tyres are not recommended".

The info controls will I suppose determine any shortcut possibilities.

On last years effort I accompanied Chris round and we kept being caught by some Weegie. I isnisted he didn't let us slow him down, and that he could continue on without us, but he steadfastly refused. I eventually figured out he was tail end charlie ensuring no one was left behind. :(

@DaveC, ha, yeah he was the back marker. It was a CTC ride, that's how they do things. Possibly had I not had that jammed chain after Redstane Rigg we might not have been so far back. It was thanks to you that I got back on the road, but by then we were les lanternes rouges...

I hope to be a tad quicker this time, but a lot depends on the weather.

Is anyone else doing the Snow Roads, or is it just me?
    Has anyone here done it?
A telegram email to the organiser confirms that I'm also in the Forth and Tay, which is getting rather close...

I'm mildly concerned that the ToEL will count as "snow roads" next week!
No telegrams sent, but I'm expecting to be on the Forth and Tay as well, (albeit slower!)

I forgot to enter ToEL - darn it. I need to write the date I need to enter by in my diary and not the date of the actual event. RAR. I shall do my own 100km anyway but with moar hills or something.

Weather forecast from Beeb for the weekend:

"By Thursday, the Atlantic weather system is expected to clear into the North Sea, with a showery northwesterly airstream pushing in across all parts that will introduce some slightly milder air, and some sunny spells for many. Friday looks like being a very similar day to Thursday, but with less of a shower risk.

The weekend will get off to a fairly settled start, but a weather system is expected to gradually encroach on the UK from the northwest through the rest of Saturday and Sunday, bringing some cloudy and wet conditions for all. "

    I've just entered:

    Forth n Tay 200, 10th March
    Port Navigation 200, 13th April
Berwick and Beattock 400, 11th May
    Deeside Lass 600, 8th June
I think I'll also look at the DIY 400km later in the year incase B & B is too close to the Snow Roads, (note to self - buy a Garmin eTrek20 GPS!)
I already have entry to Snow Roads 300km, 25th May.

Just need to sort out transport and accomodation for Balahulish, for the Port Navigation (or do a G Berwick and cycle there and back before and after the event!! ;-)

I would love to ride the Port Navigation. For me, driving out the day before and returning the day after would be the sensible approach but that amount of time away is pretty awkward. That's what makes the Merse and Moors so appealing.

Likewise - unfortunately I can't take the time out to do the Port Navvy. Merse and Moors being local looks a good route but I'm slightly intimidated by the length.
