I had my coat stolen with my bike key in it and I can't find the spare key anywhere. The bike is locked up in the stairwell with a U-lock.

Does anyone have an angle grinder that I could borrow to free my bike? Either that or advice on how to break the lock?

    Thanks alot

Is it a very expensive, high quality lock. If not, a simple hacksaw should do the job. My D-lock jammed up outside Sainsburys. Home to get the hacksaw, 10 mins later and the bike was free. Didn't really say much for the quality of the lock, or the security at Sainsburys, but at least it encouraged me to buy a decent lock(s).

If there is room and you have a sissor car jack, this will open it too. Might be worth letting the police know you have lost your jacket with the list of items in its pockets and that you plan to break the lock to get it out, incase anyone calls the police

"I saw a bike I'd quite like. Can someone tell me how to break the lock on it?"

Yes because a bike thief's first port of call is a cycling forum. Okay will try with a hack saw it's quite a solid one but a little elbow grease might free it.

    Already informed police.

    Thanks

That thought did cross my mind, which like yours is a hellish litre-and-odds of purest amorality, but I reckoned even the daftest of thieves would know that anything of any significance that happens to anyone on CCE is digitally photographed and uploaded to Twitter, Flickr, Blipfoto and sometimes even Kaputnified for posterity with all haste, so you really wouldn't ask for kleptomaniacal help here.

I appear to be the resident lock breaker on here but alas am away from the lock breaking scene for a week. If your still in trouble next week I'll free your bike in seconds. Just pm me.

I probably will be, the locksmith said it would cost £40 and I don't have any of the tools mentioned above. So I will message you next week.

    Thanks in advance
