Cycle parking in Edinburgh, where have we got to?

I hope they've updated their idea about charging £60/year for a space in one of the covered bike racks. Parking permits for zero-CO2 cars in my street are only £35. Now, if I could get a covered bike rack outside my flat for £35, that seems fairer.

Behind the times now perhaps, shouldn't they be trialling on-street covered bike parking with integrated e-bike charging points?

@Snowy they absolutely should. That could be a city transport game changer if they were decently secure...

  3. I noticed that one of the recently-installed on-pavement ones on Leith Walk has already been bent by what I presume was a vehicle driving on the pavement.

A few new racks at the edge of Festival Square, by the picnic benches opposite the Pure Gym entrance.
I already had to report some of the Leith Walk racks outside the Sainsburium when the slabs they were attached to became detached from the ground.

At long last, about 7 car parking spaces are being replaced by 48 bike spaces at the Pleasance Gym

They've had a problem of under supply there for at least three years!

    https://www.ed.ac.uk/sport-exercise/news/new-bike-parking-2018

As part of our commitment to sustainable and active travel and following consistent customer feedback about increasing bike parking, Sport & Exercise, in partnership with University of Edinburgh Transport Office, are delighted to inform members of this exciting new project. With an estimated completion date of Sunday 6th May, the work will see 49 new bike spaces created at the Pleasance.

The new bike parking will consist of a mix of Sheffield and Thames Bridge stands which are designed for ease of use. The work will also provide safer environment for pedestrian access to the new Pleasance Bar and Café.

To allow for the works, the Pleasance Gym Courtyard car park will close completely on Sunday 25 March and then partially repoen on Tuesday 27 March. During the works we plan for 3 spaces (inclusive of our blue badge disabled space) to remain available.

Alternative parking is available in the side car park and 60 Pleasance (upper courtyard.)

Members with blue disabled badges are invited to speak to a member of the team to discuss access arrangements during the works.

Following the work, the number of parking spaces in the Pleasance car park will reduce, with alternative parking available in the side car park and Upper Pleasance Courtyard.

How is one supposed to use this

    https://www.broxap.com/thames-bridge-cycle-stand.html

if you have mudguards, or if you can't lift your bike?

Obviously designed by people who never cycle.

An alarming proportion of British bikes come sans mudguards

It's probably a big part of why people who buy them come to resent riding them, so never get in the habit of doing so (oh, it rained 3 days ago, too wet to ride)

Those racks look like bicycle torture instruments. Even if I could wrangle and hoist them up, I'd not do anything so disrespectful to my lovely ladies.

So many horrible things going on there. They won't be used.

Quite bizarre, I thought Broxap had quite a good reputation.

  11. By the number of bikes chained to signposts and other assorted immovable objects on the Shore yesterday, we could do with a heck of a lot more cycle parking there.

The 4 stands by the drinkers' bench on the corner by Coalhill / Sandport Bridge just aren't enough!

I think we should have a few along the edge of the pavement by Finn & Bear, to stop Wellocks and Mark Murphy delivery vans driving up and parking on the pavement there....

The new office block "2 Semple Street" appears to be mostly finished, with some possibly-useful street-level racks now visible. I don't know if these racks are in addition to or part of the 47 bike spaces quoted in the blurb.

Anyone want to guess how many Cycle Parking spaces Edinburgh Council has?

    Answer tomorrow...

(I saw it in the list of recent FOI requests, but no cheating)

I'm not sure but I do know of a number which aren't on their map of cycle parking. So the figure may not be accurate.

"There are 3365 cycle stands in Edinburgh"

Question 2 - what do you think the real number is?

    3364?

Does 3365 not seem like a lot to you?

I assume it must include the little loops on signposts but still...

“I assume it must include the little loops on signposts”

    Might include random railings too.

Is it explicitly ‘this is the number installed by CEC’?

I should have read the question...

"Please supply the number of standard Sheffield stands that are currently installed in Edinburgh and are under the ownership of Edinburgh City Council"

I added up the capacity for all the stands marked on OSM and got 6681, which is 3340.5 stands. That includes a small number in West/East/Midlothian, and is missing some in Balerno as that's just the way I positioned the map.

This is close enough to the Council's answer that I wouldn't be surprised if it's how they figured it out themselves (perhaps with them being more careful about boundaries). It does include a lot which I don't think are owned by the council, though.

EDIT: Total capacity of all bike parking in Edinburgh according to OSM is ~9800.

Broughton St around Bellevue is totally lacking in any racks, and scarce in usable poles too, despite super wide pavements.

I've suggested stands here before, but maybe someone else could and it would have more effect.

I suspect I would have guessed less than that (I'm not sure why I didn't guess). However it's still less than 15 per square km (although usable density is higher as there are non airside at the Turnhouse for instance). Have they made the distinction between standard Shefield and Shefield extra?

There is a map of cycle parking available on the council site so I would be surprised if they needed to use OSM:

    http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/20087/cycling_and_walking/1624/quietroutes_and_cycle_parking_map

The map doesn't list the stands at Barnton shops or South Gyle station though which I would have guessed to be council owned. There are plenty of other private stands not on the map too (eg supermarkets) and sports clubs. It also shows no stands at all in Currie, Balerno, Juniper Green, Colinton etc.

That map doesn't have the Universities' bike parking on it (apart from UoE's central campus. KB alone has ~500 stands - there's no way that map's stands add up to 3300.

There is also a large disparity between ERI and Western General, all stands at both locations could be NHS property.

6 racks now installed at the Boardwalk Cafe on Silverknowes Prom. (The owner still isn't happy...)

  28. Still need more on the Shore - the paltry trio on the corner by Sandport Bridge/Coalhill aren't enough - even in winter. There are often bikes chained to the lampost near Toast or chained to the railings and lampposts opposite Finn & Bear, simply because the other ones are full.

Was at the "Mountains on Stage" film show at the Omni last night. Bike racks were rammed - I got a spot by waiting while someone else unchained their bike! Then during the evening there was a request that if anyone had chained their bike to the giraffes would they please go and remove it as any bicycles chained to the giraffes will be removed.

Haymarket is at capacity and beyond. Even the racks and railings out on the corner are full up a lot of the time. At least once I've had to cycle on to Waverley because there was no pliace to tie up at Haymarket.
