And he would only require listed building consent if welding it it the railings, which would be secure.

Cycle parking in Edinburgh, where have we got to?

It’s TEC time!
Greens will be proposing that secure parking for your bike should always cost less than a car parking permit.
How do we intend to pay for that?
Insourcing the bike parking scheme or increasing parking charges for polluting vehicles.

HERE-->https://edinburgh.gov.uk/downloads/file/30316/c7-cycle-parking…Sad that other Council depts, projects, etc either don't know or have their own ideas!

Some abominations I believe installed on Princes Street near the Johnnie Walker centre. Incompatible with anything non-standard and terrible security even for standard bikes. Secured with hex keys, will scratch your frame, and altogether just unwieldy. Apparently about £500 each! Just install concreted in Sheffield Stands!

That installation is crying out for a FOI on CEC policy and design standards and EQIA.

Saw that on Twitter.
Didn’t realise it was actually in Edinburgh!
Presumably not installed by CEC???
‘Sanctioned’ by CEC (Planning)?

I think this is the relevant planning application.
In a very quick check of the Design & Access Statement,I found this: "Externally, there are existing Sheffield cycle stands providing parking for 12 cycles. This provision will be supplemented by additional covered cycle racking for staff within the building at ground floor level."
The Sheffield racks are indeed shown in the drawings of the proposals. Whether removing them constitutes a breach of planning, I don't know.

I mean, if doing something different to what's in the planning application that's the basis for you being granted permission to do the work isn't a breach of planning, what the heck would be? How do we report stuff like this anyway?

How do you go about asking for bike stands? The new enclosed bike racks at Meadowbank are useless for my bike. A normal Sheffield stand is all that’s needed. Staff at Meadowbank do not seem to have a solution.

Phil Whatshisname? CHDotty knows, is still there. Used to be you just emailed them and they did consider your request. Except my one so the people who ran cafes at the arches could park their bikes. The Sheffield Stand, a thing of beauty and function, did not fit the aesthetic.

Contact your local Council cycling officer – there may be something they can do to help, either with the employer or nearby. For Edinburgh Council, the email address is activetravel@edinburgh.gov.uk.

Was pleased to see relatively new cycle racks installed in the alcove next to Fabios at Corstorphine (now dominoes). Last time I made the journey to that location (2021/22) my bike ended up locked to the central pedestrian crossing chicane on the 4 lane road. Small steps and all that.

I have a photo of the cycle racks outside Jonny Walker, from October 2021. Been in for a while.

not technically Edinburgh but seriously impressed with all the bike parking at the Musselburgh / Levenhall Links. good provision near the car park and the older paths, but excellent further provision around the 'new' lagoon / newly planted areas nearest the river.
(the newer ones are rather annoyingly not Sheffield racks; they're the sort of P-shaped ones, but still not bad).

People living in Edinburgh's most deprived communities are to be offered 75 per cent off secure cycle parking spaces.
The discount is part of an effort by the city council to make cycling more "inclusive and for everybody".
The £6-a-month scheme will be reduced to just £1.50 - £18 per year - for those in Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) areas one to three.

Why not offer everyone in Edinburgh secure cycle parking spaces? We know that cycling saves the city money, as 3,700 bicycles put the same level of wear on the roads as one car.
Such a cycle parking scheme could easily be paid for by applying a full-cost recovery model to the pricing of motor vehicle parking across the city....

Didn't people say that about my original post at the start of this thread 11 years ago? ;-)

Does anyone know what the situation is regarding bike parking on or near Calton Hill?
OSM shows racks outside St Andrew's House. Are they available to the general public? Don't suppose there is anything to stop anyone using them.
Collective states:
"Bikes can be locked to the rack at the base of the steps on Waterloo Place, or outside of our main East Gate entrance."
I don't see the Waterloo place rack on OSM or Streetview, and I wasn't sure if the "East Main Gate" referred to the gate at the top of the hill. I can't see any racks there either although there is the odd railing.

Nothing to stop anyone using the racks in front of St Andrew's House.

road.cc have a wee article with Caroline Barr, who I think will be known by a number of folk here, and her trouble getting secure cycle parking:
