    "I have my City Singles!"

Never understood why LB don't give a discount - say one free ticket for the twenty you're giving them the money for in advance!

they did used to. that's why we started buying them, was definitely cheaper than paying cash per ride.

Yeah its a bit odd. I suppose they'd counter with your paying for convenience. In my case I hedged and bought twenty just before the price went up last time. Still got 12 and most of them were used for picking the bike up from the office with a hang over...

At the time they stopped doing the discount it was possible to get a 10p discount from the on street ticket machine. Remember them! Seems so long ago already...

Don't think I ever used them though at their peak I was a bus pass holder and don't think they were any where I was. Why did they install them any way?

I heard that it was to 'train' us for the trams.

Presumably by the time the trams start running we'll be able to use the NFC chips built into our brains.

My Schwalbe Snow Stud clad winter wheelset is in the garage, waiting for the first hard ice/snowfall.

Ditto. The chain on the Longstaff looks rusty but I gave it a wee flick at the weekend and it moved just fine. I'll squirt some oil on it and it should be good to go.

It has Schwalbe Marathon Winters on it.

Do winter tyres grip on ice? If they do I'd love a pair for my bike.

  12. Gonna get some 26" snow tyres for the Soul and it can once again have winter duties, and then finally get that respray once that duty has been fulfilled. Already got the Carradice mount, just need a crud catcher on the front and it's all good to go.

Do winter tyres grip on ice?

Marathon Winters actually work better on hard stuff (ice, hard packed snow) than softer slush or freshly fallen snow. It's not uncommon to be able to ride up a road on studded tyres when cars are slipping and sliding everywhere. They're not infallible though so don't get too overambitious or you're likely to come unstuck quite spectacularly.

I have Schwabe winter snow tyres (2 rows of studs instead of 4) and like them. I'm going to swap this week from Marathons Plus tyres to my winter snow tyres. As well as having studs on the outside edge of the tyre, they have a great sharp cut thread which makes ridding on the film of wet leaves and mud less slippy.

I don't change my tyres for winter commuting, I'm just less likely to take the cycle path. Roads always gritted, and by the time I come in 7.30 - 9 the cars have done their job and sorted the ice, so only a few days off when snow first falls.

So if I only use the "QBC" (going to need a rude word for that Q) to cycle on, winter tyres would be an unneeded extravagance?

I believe "Quality" has already come to be a rude word due to such a hilarious misuse as the Quality Bike Corridor. A bit like "Iconic".

Quality Bike Corridor is just the start. I'm sure cooncil are also planning the Iconic Bike Milestones, the World Class Bike Conduit, the Synergistic Bike Routemap and the Tactical Bike Pipeline

It probably got called Quality Bike Corridor as a last minute compromise, after the PR people rejected the original name of Low Quality Bike Corridor.

Thanks for the winter tyre info. Interesting. I hadn't even known there was such a thing as winter tyres for bikes.

Not content with its dubious claims about cyclists and RLJ, the Institute of Advanced Motoring is now calling for BST+1, "to help make the commute home much safer for all road users; children, cyclists and motorcyclists would benefit most."

So the commute to school/work doesn't matter? But since there is no population north of the Watford Gap it's all fine and dandy. The IAM wants a three year trial!

Dave C's got his snow tyres on already. We're guaranteed another mild, windy and damp winter!

Mine aren't going on yet (!). The first day I ride in and find it's icy will be soon enough (although last year I did that and it got milder and milder until summer...)

The main problem with Marathon Winter tyres is that the studs do wear down, making them a relatively expensive proposition. Not that they aren't also decent in tread terms, for the seasonal hazard of leaf piles!

I was looking at Marathon Winter tyres last night. The site says you should run them gently for 40km on tarmac before the wintery weather comes, to bed in the studs.

It also seems that there's no Winter version of Big Apple tyres, which is what my lovely Paper Bicycle has. Oh well.

Based on reports from this forum, "bed in" means "let them fall out and then press replacement studs in yourself" I think

kaputnik: "and the Tactical Bike Pipeline"

That's far too modern. How about the excellent pedestrian-curricle thoroughfare or the superior dandy-horse by-way?
