We have a private bike rack under our building. Its a public building (of sorts) and the door into the gas room/bike room is being left open. Now some non employees have noticed and have started leaving their bikes on our rack. Our employer paid for the rack and is a little peaved. What can we do to stop this as they space is at a premium and could lead to employees not being able to lock their bikes up. I don't want to just lock the offenders bikes up (forcing them to grovel to our receptionist, as it could get nasty, the bike owners not the receptionist. Anyone have any positive experience of this please?

does it say 'private for employees only'? if not, that might be a start.

Putting a lock on the door seems the easiest way to solve the problem. Also added advantage of not having Joe Bloggs running around in the Gas room.

Public building or not, giving random strangers access to the the utility rooms doesn't sound like a very good idea.

Yeah not a great idea to make the place you lock your bikes publicly accessible, wouldn't be difficult for some shellsuit to wander in with a pair of boltcutters and help themselves to what they fancy.

If the door is publicly accessible, I'd suggest getting your employer to fit the sort of relatively cheap digilock that you see in campsite toilets and that kind of thing, so that only employees know the code and you don't have to go to expense of providing keys. If code is compromised they are simple to reprogram.

The Gas switches/handles are behind locked cage doors. I'm not sure what my employer will do buy I'd hope for a lock on the door. Its not in a public area, but down a long delivery corridor. Only accessable to those who are brave enought o walk in. There are CCTV cameras but how quickly security would react is in doubt.

A polite sign saying Cycle Parking for Company X Employees only?

Then if they continue to park there, kick their wheels in ;)

Is it a public building where members of the public might visit by bike and where someone has told them there is a dry bike rack along a long corridor? If there was public bike parking outside the building would the public use it? Or is there but it is not covered?

I recently investigated the under ground bike racks in the car park beneath the office I am to move to. I think anyone could use them but so far it has been me and a scooter. (Vespa) I did spot today a bike that had made it into the inner sanctum of free parking for council chiefs within the car park which is NCP so will follow that up. Hitherto I just used to leave my bike at the front door where there is a rack that attracts most cyclists.
