    overview

Our study, “Bicyclists’ Injuries and the Cycling Environment” (the BICE Study), examined which route types are associated with higher and lower cycling injury risk.

It was funded by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research in 2007. The study was initially designed by a team of students and faculty of the Bridge Program.

Hardly a surprise to fine that protecting cyclist from motor traffic reduces the rate of cycle KSIs given that being hit by motor vehicle is the major source of cycle KSIs. This is why the Netherlands is a very safe place to cycle (and helmets are almost entirely absent) while North America has a far worse safety record (and helmets are very common). It is the Dutch approach to Sustainable Safety (Duurzaam veilig) which make NL so safe.
