What do you take when you go cycling?

Thought my load was a little heavy this morning (I was considering using front panniers as well!) so I weighed my panniers once I got into work... 10kg, not outrageous, but explains why the headwind was a bit cheeky today when the bike weighs 15kg unladen :-o

Never mind, good for my legs lol

    Chanel No5 and a smile.

Sorry, that's the answer to a different question.

Is that the answer to "what do you wear when riding your Guardian Readers Dutch Bike?"?

Hope you keep it on a lead...

(But not so long that it trips up cyclists!!)

    1. 2 wallet-sized photos of Niki Gudex (but no wallet).
    2. 1 pump
    3. water bottle

(I usually forget to bring tire levers or patch kit, which renders the pump somewhat moot.)

I should stop laying stuff out and start working out how it's all going to fit! Full mouseover listing on the main photo page.

When it's all attached you should pop along to Kirkliston to see how much it affects your TT10 time.

I'm going to have to go over my stuff at some point, see if it'll all go in the Carradice + bar bag this year. Last year i about filled two 15l panniers now i have one 15l saddle bag. Not looking forward to that

At least Kaputnik had the nous to buy a Bananaguard in a colour other than pink, which ought to come with a sticker noting "Warning, use of this product may result in embarrassment."

I bought a friend one in pink... I didn't post it to her work for exactly the sort of reason that Arrelcat is hinting gently at.

'what do you take when you go cycling'

obviously not lubricating oil, to judge by the guffaws of amusement from 3 old, male roadies who i had the temerity to ask as they paused by the side of NCN 1.

More about our epic adventure ride shortly (after I make 2.5 kilos of currants and 2 kilos of strawberries into jelly and jam respectively).

Any idea what the total weight is?

After the 'what not to wear' thread I'm tempted to start another 'What not to carry'. Cone spanners ? !

Cycle-specific bicycle tyre levers, too; that shop must have seen you coming.

I carry cone spanners for a few days after I've adjusted them just in case they work loose.

    Bahco shifter in that photo?

You can replace all of that with a magic spanner like what the pro's use.

I have a tool roll which I think I have crammed far too much in as its starting to get quite heavy:

    2 Innertubes
    various tiewraps
    3 tyre leavers
    Lube/oil
Spare chain 5 links plus a couple of 9speed snap links
Long noce plyers with integral side cutters
    Spoke key
    Insulating tape
    2 latex free gloves
Screwdriver with flay and posi ends
    Allenkey multitool thing
    2 AAA batteries
    Universal brake/gear cable
    Puncture repair kit

You can replace all that with a mobile phone (subject to being close enough to a willing rescuer or taxi firm)
    ;)

Not lights, I had the whole handlebar available to me today :)

Regarding taxi firms, I once bust a spoke on the way in just outside Halls (what used to be) when I lived in Livi. Called a Taxi to take me home, Taxi firm called back to say they would need an extra £5 to carry the bike. I was less than happy, he basically knew I was stuffed and was taking advantage of that.

    3 tyre leavers

@DaveC your tool roll is very comprehensive and should get you out of most tight spots. However you appear to have ommitted the random selection of zip ties which no cyclist should be without.

Other random bits and pieces in my tool roll include Park tool disposable tyre boots, a 6-inch section of old tyre and some random sections of old inner tube.

I have a rather good (and equally rather frustrating) multi-tool which has a spoke key, chain breaker and screw drivers in it. The plastic sides also pop-off and can act as tyre levers but I wouldn't give them much chance. I have two of the little Lezyne aluminium ones. They are short but very strong and I don't have tyres that take that much persuasion to get on and off.

I have spare spokes zip-tied onto the seat stay for my touring bike.

Tiewraps = zipties :D (You say Tom8toes, I say Tomatoes)

They were very handy last month when a mate's tyre burst on a ride to Kinross. When pumped up the inner tube bulged out of the side so we deflated, tiewrapped/ziptied round the tyre and rim in several places and re inflated. After unfastening his front brakes we managed to get to our destination where his wife came out to collect him.

Aha. That's a new one for me. I'd only heard of them as either cable ties or zip ties. I think the latter is the Americanglish, but it is a nice onomatopoeia.
