Looking for ones that clamp on the outside and allow room for the bar-end friction shifters.
    Would cross-top types work?

@Coxy I found some Dia Compe levers on SJS which happily mount near the bar ends in which some Ultegra friction/eight-speed-indexed shifters have been plugged. The shifters were a little too fat for a Charge Slice but fit nicely in a Zenith horn-bar (and in the upturned chopped-off drops I tested the arrangement with). Various road-drop-style levers from the Bike Station's brake lever drawer were too bulky in that position. There are a couple of similar things also on SJS but the ones I bought have a little channel at the rear to allow them to almost abut the bar-end shifter's cable exit point.

@Wingpig: What do you do about the cables with those? Don't they mount on the wrong way?

No, there is nowhere to clamp a cable to them, they rely on a cable passing through them from another lever further along.

    Wingpig has a solution for bullhorn / bar-end shifter / bar-end clamp-around brakes.

It should also be possible to use a regular integrated brifter on the end of some horns, particularly if you just saw up your old drops.

Gear cables squeeze through brake lever clamp and go under the tape. They can be positioned to give your fingers somewhere to rest. Brake levers just have to protrude frontwise and loop back brakewards.
    Finished arrangement.

I have plucked up the courage to replace my handlebar tape for the first time, having watched a video of it:

In fairness, it looks no more tricky than putting a new grip on a badminton racquet, which I did three times a week for many years, so I suspect I'll get on fine.

I'm going to get Fizik Superlight, which seems to get good feedback on Wiggle.

However, before ordering, it then struck me... do you order one pack, or do you need to order two since you appear to need a different roll for each side? I have almost certainly missed something in the description, but can't see it for the life of me.

One pack does both ends of a drop bar. One packet contains two rolls.

One day I'll get round to re-taping mine. Perhaps the next time I replace the shifter cables.

Funny this came up - I just wrapped my first ever set of bars yesterday. Used Deda Elementi tape - £5 online. Having looked at a few blogs and photo guides on how to do it I figured it wasn't that tough but also it's the sort of thing I'd be liable to screw up. My tape came with a cover for the adhesive so I could practice wrapping it like paper to roughly gauge how it works. Took the backing off and went for it. And, unbelievably, I got it right. Not perfect, spacing is a bit inconsistent on the hooks, but there's no obvious problems. Feels rather better than a bare aluminium bar I can tell you (riding tapeless is yet another fashion among a certain demographic involving bicycles that lack a freewheeling mechanism, or so I've heard).

My tape came as two separate rolls, one for each side, and also included the small strips for the back of the clamps, plus bar end plugs. There were also a pair of tape-like stickers that I assume were meant as tape for the ends but I used plain old electrical tape with no issues.

The Fizik tape is excellent. Has a slight stretchiness to it which helps the wrapping process.
