News from the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport:
CILT tackles Cycling with MPs and Lords
"The All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group (APPCG) of MPs and Peers is holding an inquiry into cycling— and the CILT has been a prominent player.
Entitled 'Get Britain Cycling', the All Party Group is listening to the views of a wide range of cycling stakeholders—from government to cycling user groups, academics to city planners—to examine the barriers that deter people from cycling, and what could be done.
Having submitted written evidence for the CILT, today, Adrian Lord of Arup was the Institute's expert witness in Parliament, appearing in front of MPs and Peers who are taking oral evidence from a select group of witnesses. The sessions covered a wide range of themes:
* the need for a political, cultural, and financial step-change in cycling policies
* merits of reducing speeds
* encouraging new people to cycling from a broader cross-section of society
* designing in cycling facilities to new road schemes and designing out danger in older ones.
A Report, including key recommendations, will be written by the respected Professor Phil Goodwin and is due to be published in mid-April."
You can get a fair idea of Goodwin's character from the Beeb in 2010.
