But the move has been branded “lamentable” by one of the Capital’s best-known arts figures, Richard Demarco, who said: “You cannot have ersatz furniture in a garden full of marvellous wooden trees.”

What next? They'll stop serving hot dogs at the zoo? Won't somebody think of the children!

Some of the plastic stuff is so good, you struggle to work out if it's wood or not.

I'm generally sympathetic to having natural wood for benches, especially in a setting like this, but as K'nik says it can be hard to tell. My folks got some moulded 'adirondack' chairs . I was skeptical, until I sat in them. They turned out to be much more comfortable than any wooden ones, and easy to move around. Sometimes heretical ideas turn out good.

It is a cost cutting measure, RBGE is desperately short of money...

BOSSES at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) have axed controversial plans to replace rotting wooden memorial benches with plastic alternatives after the proposal was criticised by visitors.

So a bit of criticism works at Botanics.

Changing Government policy is just harder...
