Since the only meaningful difference between a road without a cycle lane and a road with one is the presence of a white line, unless we accept that *every* parked car on the road network poses "very significant dangers for cyclists", the only conclusion you can draw is that it must be the lane itself which is causing the danger, not the vehicles.

Probably not what they were hoping to say, I suppose.

It doesn't matter, the police are going to ignore it in order to concentrate only on anti-social cycling instead.

"449 cyclists had been issued with fixed penalty notices, and 1,800 stopped and spoken by city rangers for “anti-social cycling” between November 2009 and February 2010.

During the same period, however, only five tickets were issued to motorists parking in cycle lanes. In response to that story, a spokesperson for Cambridge Cycling Campaign said: “Although cycling may seem to be an issue in the city centre, anti-social behaviour by drivers of motor vehicles hit the top two spots in a national Home Office survey of anti-social behaviour."

But that's okay too because, as far as I can work out, the Home Office report completely ignores anti-social motoring as well.

It's a loaded comparison though, because they compare all cycling incidents with a very specific driving one.

It would be more interesting to know if the police are giving out more tickets to cyclists than to motorists (for all offences)
